Today is the second attempt at launching the Orbital Cygnus satellite to resupply ISS, Org-3. Today's launch is set to occur at 1822, just 25 minutes after sunset.

There is a very bright Iridium flare to occur in Cygnus two minutes after launch. Orb-3 should not be visible here until 150-180 seconds after launch so I should be able to observe both events, weather permitting. The current forecast is for 31% cloud cover at 1800.

I browsed the observing locations Orbital has posted and they are MD/VA centric. They do have a graphic for Bergen Co, NJ

and the Google Earth KML file has locations for the Brooklyn Bridge and Battery Park.

They don't give any indication of why there are three second stage burn trajectories in the last graphic.

I haven't been able to figure out how to make Earth show me the trajectory from my observing location but based on the Brooklyn Bridge and Battery graphics it looks like I will be safe in assuming it will break the horizon over Staten Island around that end of the Verrizano Narrows Bridge and probably become visible somewhere over the bridge.

I am just back from Pier 13. I didn't look up when I left the house but when I got downtown say that there was a deck of stratus clouds. I saw a brief flare from the Iridium satellite--not anywhere near as long as a mag -7.9 to -8.4 flare should have been. There was a guy there hoping to see the Orb-3 launch as well. He was watching it on his phone and confirmed liftoff while I was looking at the Iridium then I heard "Ho, F__k" and knew immediately what had happened. When I looked at his phone the screen was filled with a huge orange and black fireball. I thought I heard the announcer say as he was reading off the liftoff statistics that the engines were operating at 180% of capacity which seems to greatly anything an engine would be designed to endure. I am wondering how much the insurance payout will be on it and who makes it. There is the obvious loss of the rocket and satellite, the loss of the payload and the damage to the launch facility. And when can the ISS expect to see another US supply mission (I think a Progress mission launched today or will launch tomorrow from Russia).

Watching the replay of the launch footage on CNN I hear that the power was announced as 108% just before the rocket appeared to catch fire at the bottom and exploded before falling back to the launch pad and the solid rocket of Stage 2 also exploding.

I stopped off ar Pier 13 tonight on my way to NYC Resistor for Laser Night with the intent of "filming" the launch of Orbital's Cyugnus Orb-3 resupply mission to ISS.  I arrived around 1830 for an 1845 launch and set up on the SE corner of the upper deck of the pier.  It was dark enough that the rocket should have been visible but nothing had appeared by 1900 so I gave up and headed over to Brooklyn.  On arriving at Resistor I checked and found that the launch had been scrubbed due to a boat in the downrange safety area.  The next launch attempt will be tomorrow at 1822 when the sky will be much lighter and there are supposed to be more clouds in my local sky.

I found that my camera kept going out of focus while it was recording video.  I suspect that it is trying to spot meter which is how it is set up for still photography.  Since there is nothing in the sky wherever my focus point was last set it repeatedly searches for something there and can't decide what to do when it can't find anything to focus on.  8 need to research resetting the metering mode to matrix or evaluative or whatever we call that use everything mode today.

There was an ISS pass that would have been nice to have seen it it had crossed or even been near the Org-3 trajectory but it was too far to the west and I missed it altogether.

I did catch an Iridium flare up in Cepheus before the time of the launch.

Tonight was an Astronomy Night at Intrepid. It wasn't supposed to have been great weather--cold, windy, and cloudy--but turned out to be not too bad.

After a lot of rain on Wednesday and some on Thursday the morning broke cloudy but by 1000 I was seeing some patches of blue sky to the west. It equivocated during the day and was looking pretty cloudy around 1600 but it was mild and not windy. By event time the sky was mostly clear, the temperature mild, and the wind calm. There was enough light cloud in the area that seeing wasn't that great and some bright stars low on the horizon disappeared.

There were at least ten telescopes and a pair of binoculars there tonight and the crowd was sparse when spread across all of them. I don't think my line was ever more than two deep.

I started off the evening looking for satellites. There was supposed to have been an Irridium flare just before an ISS pass but that didn't occur. There were discrepancies among the data three of us had on the ISS pass. Johnathan's computer was showing it in progress four minutes before it actually started. John't data showed it starting farther north and passing overhead. My data showed it starting farther south and only achieving a maximum altitude of 77°. The pass began roughly where I predicted and did pass nearly overhead as John had predicted.

I had wanted to do some binocular astronomy but wasn't finding much once I got the binocular mounted on the tripod. I think I got the Andromeda Galaxy in the FoV hand held but it has been so long since I have used the binocular on the tripod that I wasn't able to recover the galaxy. Likewise the Coathanger. Aside from translating from one location to another, the Coathanger was so high up that I couldn't get my head under the eyepieces.

I started the night on the Engagement Ring which I found to be a very good target for public observing since the North Star doesn't move and you don;t have to be reacquiring the star unless the tripod gets kicked. I never saw more than two stars in the ring but other younger eyes reported up to four. People enjoyed the story and knowing something about asterisms and how they relate to constellations.

Toward the end of the night I switched over to Alberio, which many people had trouble seeing and particularly the faint blue component. I attribute this to poor seeing.

They have a new exhibit in the Space Shuttle pavilion on the Hubble repair missions. They gave all of the astronomers passes to see it for free so since the crowd was light and I have never seen the Shuttle since it was hoisted onto Intrepid and enclosed in its building I availed myself of the opportunity. I set my tripod legs through the fence around the planes on the flight deck so that it would not get knocked over while unattended and aimed it at Polaris since it would not move out of the FoV while I was gone. The Hubble exhibit was nicely assembled but not a lot of stuff. It is all done in what looks like structural aluminum components and has a very clean, modern look. But other than about a dozen pieces of machinery that were designed to facilitate the repairs it was all text and a few big pictures. What was most impressive was Endeavour. When you come out of the tunnel entrance into the pavilion you are under the Shuttle and looking up you can't even tell what part of it you are under. It turns out it is the back end where the cover is over the motors. I have seen the shuttle as it has flown past Manhattan on launch, in transport on the barge going up the Hudson River, and at close range when it was hoisted from the barge onto Intrepid, but being under it it was at once larger and smaller than I anticipated. Not that modern airports all have jetways we don't have an opportunity to walk on the tarmac and look up at the plane we are going to fly in to appreciate its size. We may see part of it through windows in the departure lounge, it it has them, but mostly we walk from the gate through a small tube into a little bit larger tube and have no concept of how large that tube really is.

Standing under the belly of the Shuttle with it stretching out in all directions it appears huge. Standing at the back end looking into the landing gear well you can see heat shield tiles edge on and they appear to be 9"-12" thick. Then you think that this was used to construct piece by piece, the International Space Station which is the size of a football field
and you realize just how small it is.

I have been doing some research on photographing eclipses on Fred Espenak's Mr. Eclipse web site. I started looking for solar filters for my camera and found the Hoya X400 neutral density filter listed as being good for eclipse photography on both Fred's pages and in the Adorama web page. That wasn't until after I had emailed Peter Lipschutz down at Adorama to ask what they had that would work. They also sell a real solar filter for an 80mm telescope that would probably work but once I found the ND filter could be used I thought it would be the better deal since I could also use it for normal photography.

Fred had a table on eclipse photography exposure that I have adapted to my camera, the X400 filter and this eclipse (which the current weather says may be in the clouds):

As I understand the table, I am to select my ISO and read across the line to the f-stop I want to use then read down to see the shutter speed to use for the circumstances of the eclipse that apply. I don't want to use an ISO greater than 400 to minimize noise in the images and I would want to use the smallest f-stop possible to allow for maximum focus wiggle room. But with the X400 filter my only shutter speed options are 1/2 second and slower and that is going to show earth movement by stretching the Sun and Moon so I will only be able to use this filter for eclipse photographs at 1/2 second and f4.

Unfortunately all of the camera stores are closed in observance of Sukkot and I have a photography class to attend on Sunday when they reopen (and it is sea chantey Sunday if I didn't have the class) so I will not be able to get to Adorama before Monday morning. I am hoping that Peter or Mike cam validate my chart and assumptions.

I just got home from the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum's Astronomy Night public observing night. There were very few telescopes there. I think four at any one time. And at the end of the night the museum's organizer said he had been told that 700 visitors went through the turnstiles. It didn't seem like there were that many people up on the flight deck but since it was a little cool with a breeze that made it chilly up there some people may have opted for just the indoor activities down on the hanger deck. Most of the night all of the telescopes were pointed at the Moon. When it started moving close to the carrier's island I switched to Alberio. I was told by several people early on that I had the best view of the Moon out of all of the telescopes in operation at the time--two refractors and another catadioptric. At the time there were long lines at all of the scopes so I didn't get a chance to look through any of the optics to make my own comparison. It might be that I was viewing at 25x, which I normally do at piblic events because I find focus to be easiest to achieve and the observer can move into and out of the eyepiece to fine tune focus if they need to, and the others might have been using more power.
