Sunspots Observed

I looked for sunspots on two thirds of the days this month and didn't see any although there were some appearing in the SOHO images.

I was surprised that I got as much observing time in this month as I did. I knew I was getting a lot of sessions but they were mostly short ones to observe the Sun or an Iridium flare. They and the few Moon sessions added up.

Climate Summary for June 2008

We had one record-breaking high temperature this month and only 11 days when the mean temperature was below normal. There were 10 days when the low was below normal and 15 days when the high was above normal.

There were 16 days with more than a trace of precipitation.

There have been more than normal cooling degree days all but 11 days this month.

Marcos took me to see WALL-E this morning. It is a PIXAR/Walt Disney animated film about an automated robot that is left on Earth when the population evacuates for a planned 500 year space journey while the robots clean up the place. There are some images of galaxies and other space images that are nice. I suspect that they are Hubble images but wasn't watching in the credits to see if NASA was credited. There is a lot os social commentary that will be lost on the kids.

I decided to take a look at where craters are located on the Moon and see if there is any kind or relationship between class and size. To do this I created a mash-up in Excel taking class information from C herrington (who gets it from Baldwin – The Measure of the Moon), the diameter information from the Field Map of the Moon (because it only lists one figure for each crater) and the location information from the Rukl Lunar Atlas. (The Field Map is also a Rulk map so I probably could have gotten the size and location information out of the atlas but I had started with the Field Map.)

The first thing I found was that Cherrington uses two systems to categorize craters. Some craters are listed with Baldwin’s class and others are listed with an age classifier. I am assuming that since Baldwin only classified 300-400 craters the ones that Cherrington lists by age are ones that Baldwin didn’t list. Cherrington doesn’t provide a crosswalk between the two systems of classification although his placement of the data in his gazetteer seems to imply that they are interchangeable. So I made a chart comparing the numbers of craters in each age and Class category.

The main product ended up being so cluttered with craters, like the surface of the Moon itself, that It is hard to interpret any trend.

I checked the weather and they said it was cloudy but all I saw was a few scatted clouds and did see the moon unobstructed. After the sun came up there were more clouds visible and when I went out around 0930 EDT it was overcast.

The First Quarter Moon was over to the East more than the flare was supposed to be and was easily visible unobstructed in the growing twilight even though it was lower in the sky.

The humidity has dropped since dinnertime, but it is still close out. I can see some cloud again but can’t be sure how much there really is. I did see the Big Dipper (a.k.a., the Plough) so the sky is clear at least there.

I had gone up to PSC and found a place where I could see the chunk of sky I needed between the trees and the buildings and was sitting there reading when one of the rent-a-cops came by and told me that it was after 2300 EDT and I had to leave. I checked to make sure she was serious and she was so I packed up and moved outside of the circle onto the sidewalk that provides access to eight apartment buildings and was reading there for a short while when another rent-a-cop came by with the same demand. It seems that they are classifying the sidewalks part of the “park” and are denying access between 2300 EDT and 0600 EDT. This is crazy since it means that anyone who is out late at night can’t get to their apartment without breaking the “law” This will affect over 500 families. I hope this is a temporary thing in anticipation of the 4th of July since there is no reasoning with the rent-a-cops. I went up to the oval, which is just as much a “park” and was not hastled at all there.

This isn’t an astronomical observation, but it is astronomy related. Today I went out to Orchard Beach where the Urban Park Rangers were holding a horseshoe Crab hunt. The crabs come ashore to breed at sunset on a spring high tide. So the parks department scheduled the hunt at 1000 EDT on a rising tide a week after apogee. The rangers didn’t even know what time the walk was supposed to take place.

I walked out to the beach and arrived 45-30 minutes early and walked along the beach to the ranger station. Along the way I found a lot of nest sites and a few stranded crabs as well as other interesting things.


Sea Lettuce, Ulva lactuca
Sea Lettuce is one of the most familiar shallow-water seaweeds. It grows in a variety of places ranging from exposed rocks to quiet, semistagnant, brackish pools, where huge detached sheets carpet the muddy bottoms. Tolerant of or actually thriving in moderate pollution. Eddible.

Snails

A conch shell with limpets or slipper shells inside and parts of a crab – probably a common spider crab, Libinia emarginata.

Clams


Green Crab, Carcinus maenas, probably dead.
A common British and n. European crab, also reported from Brazil, Panama, Suez Canal, Australia, and Hawaii, presumably by accidental transport. Tolerates salinities as low as 6%. Found under stones and in pools intertidally, also in crevices in sea walls and jetties.
to 3 in. (75 mm). N.J. to Nova Scotia. Unknown north of Cape Cod in the 19th century; now probably the most common New England shore crab at least as far north as Bay of Fundy. South in N.J. at least to Manasquan Inlet but absent from Delaware Bay. Intertidal to subtidal at shallow depths.


Rockweed, Fucus sp. and Razor Clam, Ensis directus (and Styrofoam cup).
Burrows vertically in sandbars, and the speed with which it can sink down out of sight in wet sand is astonishing. Also a successful if somewhat erratic swimmer. The long foot is extended out and folded back against the shell, then suddenly straightened out as if it were a steel spring, and the clam is propelled like an arrow for 3 or 4 feet. Razor clams are tender if not too large and have an excellent flavor.

Flat-clawed Hermit Crab, Pugurus pollicaris
Our largest hermit; chiefly subtidal but may be cast ashore by storm tides. Occupies large moon shells and werlks. Latin name credits it with a thumb, perhaps an allusion to thumblike angle of movable finger on great claw.
This guy pulled into the shell when I picked him up so I know he was alive but he gave no sign of it when I touched his feelers.

My first Atlantic Horseshoe Crab, Limulus polyphemus
Identification: Unmistakable! Females reach 2 ft. (600 mm) including the tail spike [I had one that was that big across the body of the shell when I spent a summer on Long Island]; first 4 pairs of legs similar. Males smaller, 1st pair of legs hevier and different from other 3 pairs. Hatchlings lack tail spike; after 1st molt they resemble adults.
Where Found: Bar Harbor, Maine to Gulf of Mexico. Intertidal to subtidal down to about 75 ft. (22.5 m).
Remarks<: Adults migrate into shallow water in late spring and lay greenish eggs – 1/8 in (3 mm) in diameter – in upper intertidal zone. Sand-colored young remain near shore, moving gradually into deeper water as they grow older and darker. Horseshoe crabs can swim, awkwardly and upside down, but spend most of their time rummaging through bottom sand and muck for the worms and mollusks that are their main food. They were once harvested for fertilizer, and a few are still taken to be chopped up for lobster bait. Despite their armament of spines, tail spike, and wriggling, weakly clawed feet, horseshoe crabs are harmless.
Family: Limulidae.


This is the view from the front end. You can see an eye just under a protective spine. They eye has a hard, transparent covering and no lid.


This is the back end. The tail can move to some extent in all directions. It is used, most successfully in the water, by the crab to turn itself over when upside down.


There about a half-dozen shallow depressions in this image where crabs have laid their eggs. The depressions can be up to 8" deep and there doesn’t appear to be any attempt to fill them in, that being left to the tide and waves.

We didn’t find any eggs but didn’t disturb the nests to make a thorough search.


The Egrets


Northern Moon Shell, Lunatia heros sand collar.
Moon shells are common on beaches. “Sand collars” containing their eggs are also found ashore. (Note: Sand collars are very fragile when dried.) Live shells are often seen plowing along, half-buried, on wet beach flats. They are predatory on other mollusks, which they drill neatly, making a beveled hole. The foot is enormous but can be completely retracted.


If you look closely you can follow this crab’s curving track clockwise from its nets at the top of the image.


One that didn’t make it.


A pair of buried crabs that have been partially dug up. Some of these crabs we dug up so we could see the difference between males and females.


This is a female crab. The first pairs of claws from the front of the shell back are all the same.


This is a male crab. The first pair of claws has is boxing glove-like and is used by the male to hold onto the back edge of the female’s shell when she comes ashore.


The crabs, at least on land, seem to walk in curved tracks. This one turned a couple of loops and never got into the water while we were watching even though she was no more than a yard away.

After a while on the beach the rangers took us over to the bay side where we looked for other types of crabs.

The fiddler crabs are very skittish and scurry to their holes as soon as they notice any movement. But if you stand still and start looking far away you notice movement on the sand.

As I stood there crabs closer to me started coming out. I noticed some sort of a display behavior. The crabs rear up on their hind legs and splay out their claws. One will do it and then other will join in. I am assuming that this is supposed to make them look bigger to the others and establishing a pecking order.

The crabs climb into their holes and gather up sand which they form into a ball and pull out of the hole in their trailing feet. They take this ball some distance from their hole and drop it, often right next to the hole of a crab with a smaller claw. The object appears to be to keep the area around their hole clear of obstructions so they can scurry into it easily when an emergency arises.

There are blue muscle beds along the high tide line.


The sea gulls eat the muscles and the some of the area is covered with broken shells. I found it interesting that the large intact shells were farthest from the water

while the smallest broken fragments were in the intertidal zone.

I would have expected the reverse to be the case. There isn't that much wave action here but my hypothesis is that when the waves come onshore they carry the shells up the beach and after the wave has expended most of its energy it can't carry the intact shells back down to the water's edge so only the fragments end up there.

I went back to the sound side and walked the length of the beach (1.1 mile) and found very few more horseshoe crabs.


This one was apparently just digging itself into the sand, probably to prevent dessication before it gets covered by the incoming tide but possibly on a nest. I didn't disturb it.

There were more gulls (a.k.a. dump ducks) at this end of the beach.


Mostly there are immature Ring-billed Gulls, Laurus delawarensis, (the brownish mottled birds) a few adult Ring-billed Gulls (the gray and white birds) and one Great Black-Backed Gull, Larus marinus, (the gull with the black back).
And a few Bonaparte's Gulls, Larus philadelphia.

The clouds are cirro-stratus and building. The glare from the diffused sunlight is bad. I had to wait for a break in the clouds for it to be clear enough to be sure what I was (not) seeing.

I got the template problem straightened out with Volume II of the blog and started copying old posts into it. Then I discovered that I had somehow gotten two instances of Volume I open and was placing duplicate copies of all of the February posts into it. I have that cleaned up now and will try to copy a month at a time into Volume II and once everything is there will only place subsequent posts in that blog. For the time being things will go here. Hopefully by the end of July it will all be sorted out.



I keep updating target lists and then not looking at them. This morning I missed a Mag. -7 Iridium flare and at noon the Sun’s alignment with the McGraw-Hill Sun Triangle.

The air feels very moist and my skin is clammy. The pages of my book are warping from the moisture they are absorbing.
I had to wair a good while for a break in the clouds to pass in front of the Sun to be able to make an observation. The various densities of swirling cloud looked interesting passing in front of the Sun.
Most of the clouds dissipated down to scattered clouds after I had made my observation and was sitting there reading. The humidity seemed to decrease also and I don’t know whether to attribute that to a frontal passage or if it was just a perception thing with me sitting there in the bright, hot Sun.

I haven’t seen much of this Shuttle mission but did get a chance to see the landing this morning and post mission briefing this afternoon. It was interesting that there was a lot said at the press conference about moving into a ‘learning to live in space mode.’ I saw part of the first EVA and it seemed like there was more direction of the activities from space than there has been on previous missions.

  • There is a nice crescent of three craters beneath Bullialdus – Bullialdis A (26 km), Bullialdus B (21 km) and K¨o;nig (23 km).
  • The western interior of Sunus Iridum, Montes Jura, is strongly lit and very bright.
  • Helicon (24 km; 1) and Le Verrier (20; 1) are visible but almost the same color as the Mare Imbrium floor around them.
  • Rays are becoming more visible
  • Less of Mare Smythii is visible tonight

2224 EDTAstronomical Twilight ends
2250 EDTMy view just went soft. The air is very moist and there is noticeable haze around the Moon. I can’t find any dewing on the optics. The mosquitoes are becoming active also which is unusual this late after sunset.

It wasn’t until midnight when I was home and updating my field notes that I realized that I had gotten through the whole day oblivious to the fact that it was Friday the 13th.

I have gotten the temperature and humidity information for the recent heat wave entered into a spreadsheet and debugged the monstrous formula for estimating the heat index so now have a chart of the event.

The interesting thing is that the heat index is highest when the humidity is lowest. I would have expected the reverse to have been true.

It also appears that the heat index never got as high as it was predicted to which was up to 104° F.



Pluto Again

The IAU has now decided that Pluto and Eris - and anything else that gets discovered orbiting beyond Neptune and is essentially round - is a Plutoid.

The IAU has been meeting in Europe and argued it out again.

As I read the BBC News article that was posted this morning this does not change the classification of Pluto as a Dwarf Planet (which is not a planet). The article doesn't say if this needs another big vote at some future date of is a final decision.

There is a broad patch of cloud lit up surrounding the Moon. It is high cirrus but there is no color fringing so there is no ice involved.
The limb of the Moon only boils ever so slightly but sometimes the focus is soft and other times it is crisp so there is atmospheric movement.

  • The mountains beneath Plato are bright and showing good relief against the darker Mare Imbrium floor.
  • Mons La Hire is in shadow but is catching light on its peak.
  • There is some dark gray on the eastern limb but there is also a band of blue chromatic aberration there that is making it hard to see detail. I can see Mare Humboldtianum and more lunar surface beyone it on the NNE limb. Mare Marginis is visible to the E and Mare Smythii beneath it.
  • Rays are becoming visible around Langrenous and a good ways distant from Tycho. Some faint rays are visible around Copernicus chiefly to the NE.
  • The central peak in Copernicus is starting to catch light and the western wall and floor are illuminated.

I could just make out Mizar naked-eye. The two lower stars of the parallelogram of Lyra, Sheliak and Sulafat, are visible but the upper ones, δ1 Lyr and δ2 Lyr, and ε1 and ε2 are not.

CommentsMars looks like a bright, slightly golden comet with the tails pointing to the lower right.
HIP 46232 it to the lower right. It is faint and maybe slightly bluish although Planetarium indicates that it is red.

CommentsI played with the back can of SAR a bit and got better collimation that got rid of most of the coma. The planet resolved into a round disk with a short line passing through it 10:00 to 4:00. The upper portion of the line appears to be broken next to the planet but according to Starry Night Starter the shadow on the ring should be on the trailing edge of the rings which would be to the lower tight in my scope.

  • There appears to be a faint ring on the floor of Mare Imbrium below Montes Recti (90 km), Montes Tenerife (182 km), and Mons Pico (25 km) that looks to me as though there might be a drowned crater there, it being the inner wall and the above mentioned features an outer wall – like the Altai Scarp and Mare Nectaris.
  • Dorsum Grabau (121 km) is faintly visible
  • Bancroft (13 km) is visible. I see a color/shade/texture difference at the location of Feuillee (9 km) and Beer (9 km) but I can’t resolve it into individual craters.
  • Mons Wolf (35 km) was seen
  • Montes Appeninus (401 km) look like a string of four individual mountains (Mons Wolf being the southern terminal one)
  • Vallis Alps (166 km) is visible as a faint gray line
  • Cassini (56 km) is hardly visible.
  • The following features in Montes Appeninus were identified:
    • Promontorium Deville (20 km)
    • Promontorium Agassiz (20 km)
    • Mons Blanc (25 km)
    • Mons Piton (25 km)
    • Piazzi Smyth (13 km)
    • Kirch (11 km)
    • Montes Spitzenbergen (60 km)
    • Conon (21 km)
