Please Read About My Friend Sarah!

I know I have talked about my friend Sarah many many times before on my blog. For those of you who do not "know" Sarah, let me fill you in just a bit on Sarah and how the two of us met.

Sarah and her husband Chad were running together in the 2007 Chicago Marathon. On mile five the two of them separated and told each other that they would meet up at the finish line at the end of the race. When Sarah made it to the finish line Chad was not there so she went back to the hotel. Shortly after Sarah received a phone call from a man asking if she was Mrs. Schieber. The man was calling to tell Sarah that Chad has passed away during the race. It was later determined that Chad died from a rare heart condition. In the blink of an eye Sarah's entire world changed and she was left a young widow with three small children.

When I moved back to Midland with my parents several people told me I needed to meet Sarah because she knew exactly what I was going through. I was very reluctant to meet her. I had my friends, I had my family and I didn't feel comfortable pouring my heart out to a person I didn't even know. However I believe God had a different plan. One day while blogging I somehow came a crossed Sarah's blog. I just so happened to find her blog on the one year anniversary of Chad's death. Her post was about her grief, what they had been through in the year and how her and the kids were marking the day. I sat reading her post with tears streaming down my face. As soon as I was done reading I sent Sarah an email. The next morning I received an email back from Sarah. Two nights later I met her at one of her CD signings. Even though I was hesitant to meet her I felt a connection to Sarah instantly. After that night we began to email each other back and forth about the grief that we were feeling. It was more of me asking and leaning on Sarah for support. That was in October, since then most of our emails have stopped as we have now developed a special friendship. I'm so grateful that for what ever reason I found Sarah's blog that October night. I can honestly say that I think I'm doing as well as I am because of Sarah. She gets it, she knows exactly how I'm feeling and when I leave her I do feel as though I'm going to make it and that I will be ok. Sarah leaves me feeling hopeful for my future in a time when hope and happiness at times can seem so distant.

Now for Sarah's big news....

Right before Chad died Sarah had just released her first solo Christian album called "Gratitude" It is a great CD with many wonderful songs. After Chad died and in the midst of the grief Sarah began writing in her journal and also began writing songs that expressed what she was feeling. Sarah used her faith and love of music to help cope wit the overwhelming grief of losing her beloved husband. Sarah also released a Christmas song this year called, "Christmas in Heaven" (if I remember correctly several of you ordered this single) Through Sarah's grief her new CD "The Long October Road" was born. Many of you have been asking me when and where you can get this CD. Well I'm happy to tell you that the CD is being released the Friday May 29th!!

Sarah is doing a FREE concert this Friday night at The Christian Celebration Center in Midland, Michigan at 7:00 pm. If any of you who read my blog live close to the Midland area I would highly recommend that you make the drive and attend the concert. You will get to meet Sarah, hear her story and hear her sing many of the songs off of the new CD, as well as a few of her older songs and be able to purchase the new CD. You will probably cry, but I guarantee by the end of the night you will leave with a big smile on your face and hope in your heart.

On tonight's local news Sarah was featured in a story about her singing and about the her story that she is now living. The clip can be found here http://www.connectmidmichigan.com/news/video.aspx?id=304249. For those of you who don't live close to Michigan go ahead and watch the clip, Sarah did a great job and you will get a little snip it of her story. Before the story plays there is a little commercial so just give it a few seconds.

For those of you who are interested in ordering a CD you can go to Sarah's website at http://www.sarahschieber.com/ A brand spanking new website will be launched this week where you can order the CD online. In the mean time if you would like to order the CD leave me your information in a comment with your email and I will contact you when the site is up and running.

I will also encourage all of you to go and visit Sarah's blog http://sarahschieber.blogspot.com This is another place where Sarah will share her story with you.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know my friend Sarah a bit more. If you have any questions about her music, or purchasing her CD please leave me a comment and I will get back to you.

My Weekend

Well, I was in the process of writing a post on Friday before I left for the weekend when all of a sudden the internet was turned off for the weekend by my Dad. I was going to tell you all that my entire family and I were heading up to my Grandma's house in Traverse City, Michigan and that we don't have internet at the house (gasp!) so I wouldn't be posting but I would be back on Monday with a run down of my weekend.

Guess what...I was at my Grandma's house where there is no internet, but I'm back now and able to post about my weekend.

I have always loved going to my Grandma's. The house is right on the lake so there is always lots to do. My grandparent's house in Traverse City has always been a special place for my entire family. Now that both of my Grandparents are gone I think it has even more meaning to our family. The last 9 years or so I have only gotten the chance to go to the house once a year because Shawn and I always lived too far away to make the trip more often. Shawn and I usually would spend the entire July 4th week at the house for our yearly vacation.

While I was looking forward to going to Traverse City I was also very anxious about it as well. This was the first time that I was going there without Shawn and I knew I was more than likely going to have a few difficult moments. At first I thought about just staying home. However, I knew that if I stayed home then the next time I went up there it would still be hard. So like most things the last 9 months I faced it and decided to go up and spend the weekend with my family. My sister, Katie and I drove up on Friday after she got home from work. As I pulled onto the road the house is on I got very anxious, almost like when you get butterfly's in the pit of your stomach. I walked into the house and was fine. Phew the longer I was there the more the anxious feelings went away. Later that night my cousins, and Aunt and Uncle arrived and we just sat around in the living room talking. It was nice to talk with them because I had not seen them since Shawn's funeral.

As bedtime approached I started to get that nervous/anxious feeling back. Typically Shawn and I always slept in the finished basement. Since the house was full and the bedrooms were occupied I knew I would again be sleeping in the basement. I was fine with this and I had prepared myself for it. However, when the time came for me to fall asleep for the first time in the house without Shawn it was too much and I ended up crying a little bit. It's hard enough to go to sleep every night without him, but for some reason it was especially hard falling asleep there without him. As I tried to fall asleep I texted my friend Sarah and we talked about how sucky it feels to be a widow and to continue to live when you miss you husband so bad. After a short while I fell asleep and ended up sleeping fairly well.

Saturday morning was rather cloudy and a bit chilly. Gotta love the Michigan weather...NOT!! The morning was spent hanging out and talking with my family. My brother Matt and his girlfriend Erika made it to the house by late morning. Before my cousins, Aunt and Uncle left we ate a great lunch together. After they left my Mom, sister and I drove into town and went shopping for a few hours. You can't go to Traverse City without shopping. I'm glad I went, many of the stores were having great deals and I got a few really cute summer things for really cheap! After we got back from shopping we all sat around in the living room eating pizza and playing with the dogs. My brother has a Boston Terrier named Porter, so Bo had an amazing fun weekend as well and is one tuckered little puppy. After the dogs had went to sleep my Matt, Erika, Katie and I all decided to play cards. Well actually Matt and Erika taught Katie and I to play Eucher. I'm still not sure I totally understand how to play, but I had a good time anyways and the four of us shared many laughs.

The sun was finally shinning by Sunday morning. The air was still cool and there was a chilly breeze blowing off the lake but it was nice enough to "play" outside. We all took the dogs down by the water to play in the lake. Matt would throw a tennis ball and the dogs would swim out after it. Well, technically Porter would swim out after it and Bo would go out just enough to get his little paws wet, I think he was a bit scared. Then we threw the ball in the backyard for the dogs and watched them run around like wild little creatures. I also took Bo for a really long walk. It was great walking up there and gave me a little bit of time to think about a few things I had on my mind. Sunday afternoon I spent most of the time sitting on the deck reading my book in the sun. It was nice and relaxing and most of the family did much of the same thing.

Sunday night I met a friend from Midland for dinner and drinks and got to meet two of her four children. Once a week I meet with three other ladies here in town. All of our husbands died very suddenly with in 3 weeks of each other. We started meeting in October and have really gotten to know each other and support each other as well. We have our meeting once a week, but have also started to do "fun" things outside of our meeting. Anyways, one of the ladies has a cottage not too far from my Grandma's house so we decided to go out for a while. Like I said I got to meet two of her children, but her and I also got a chance to talk about being up north with out our husbands. I'm really glad her and I got a chance to hang out and we had a great time over dinner. Once I returned back to the house it was another game of Euchre and then a semi early bedtime.

The sun was shining this morning when I woke up as well and was even a bit warmer than the previous days. Thank goodness!!! For a few moments this morning out of nowhere I began to cry. I'm not really sure why. I think it is because mornings like today were always the types of mornings where Shawn and I would hang out, spending time with each other and then go for a nice long walk. I found myself really missing Shawn this morning so I think it was good to get a few more tears out. After that I spent some more time sitting on the deck with my book taking in the warm rays of the sun. After lunch we threw the balls in the water for the dogs some more and played with them in the back yard.

The entire family then ate a lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chip, corn on the cob and chocolate chip cookies....YUMMY!! After that Katie and I decided it was time to head for home. We packed up the car and then were on our way back to Midland.

Katie and I spend the night in front of the TV watching Jon and Kate plus 8. I don't even know what to think about that. I know it is only a TV show, but I had tears in my eyes at the end when Jon and Kate were talking about their future and about the future of their marriage. It sounds crazy and cheesy...but I really hope they are able to work things out.

So there you have it my weekend in Traverse City. I did have some hard times, but there were many good times as well and new memories were made. I'm glad I decided to go up north instead of staying home. I needed to face Traverse City without Shawn and I did as hard as it was, but just like everything else the last nine months I faced it and I did it. All in all it was a good weekend.

I hope you all had a good weekend as well!

Yesterday and A Few Random Things

May 19, 2001 was a very special day for Shawn and I. That was the day that we got married. Yesterday would have been our eight year wedding anniversary. It seems like such a strange thing to think about...being married for eight years. By 10:00 in the morning two of my best friends had called me to see how I was doing. By noon I had received two phone calls from two of the ladies in my support group. I really an lucky to have such great friends. All things considered I had an "ok" day. Naturally our anniversary was the first thing I thought about when my eyes opened in the morning. I kept myself busy yesterday doing stuff for Sarah, so I didn't have much time to think about it, which I think that was a good thing. In the afternoon I took two yellow roses, and one red rose out to Shawn's grave and just sat there for a while. It was such a beautiful day to be outside (just like the day we got married), so I enjoyed the sun while talking to Shawn. There were only two times when I got kind of teary yesterday. One was while I was in the car. I saw an older couple walking on the sidewalk and they were holding hands and I could tell they were smiling. I found myself wondering how long the had been married. After that I got a little sad because I wanted that to be Shawn and one day, I wanted us to be that old couple holding hands smiling and talking to each other while on a walk. I will never get to experience that with Shawn. The other time I got a few tears in my eyes was right before I fell asleep. On every anniversary Shawn would always give me a gift (last year I got an AWESOME Coach purse), but he would also write me a letter, but I wasn't allowed to open that until we went to bed. So as I was falling asleep I found myself missing my yearly letter. Instead of crying I just went to my dresser and got out the letter from last year and re-read that. I had a few tears, but it did make me feel better. As I was falling asleep I thought about all the great times Shawn and I had during our marriage.

I love, love, love Jon Bon Jovi. I mean love him!! Always have and probably always will. Well because of my love for Bon Jovi it was Shawn's idea to have one of his songs played at our wedding. How sweet is that...I had a Bon Jovi song at my wedding and it wasn't' even my idea! Anyways the two of us picked "Thank You for Loving Me" The song played as we walked down the aisle. The only thing I was kind of upset about was the fact that I didn't really get to hear the whole song, because we were already outside by the time the song was over. O-well, it was still a great day and I still think it's awesome I had a Bon Jovi song at my wedding. Below is the acoustic version of the song for those who are interested in listening.

Now for a story... Yesterday I went to the gym. I never change my gym clothes in the locker room after working out. I just go straight home so it is no big deal. Yesterday I had a few things to do after working out so I changed my clothes. When I walked into the locker room I immediately saw this cute little old lady standing in the corner. Her hair was all done up, she had on make up and was standing in her bathing suit. As I was getting undressed she came up to be and in her oh so sweet old lady voice she asked if I could do a favor for her. As I'm standing dripping with sweat in my sports bra and shorts I tell her yes. She then asked me if I would help her take off her necklace because she didn't want it to get wet. I told her no problem at all. As I'm trying to take her necklace off she tells me that she doesn't want to creep me out but that inside of her locket his the ashes of her husband that just passed away. Insert big ole lump in my throat here. I just looked at her and told her that it didn't freak me out at all. She turned to me and told me that her necklace usually makes people feel uncomfortable. At that moment I told her that I wasn't freaked out at all and showed her my necklace of Shawn's thumb print. I told her that my husband had too recently passed away and that I wear his thumbprint around my neck every day. She looked at me and started crying, then she gave me the biggest old lady hug I think I have ever gotten. She told me that I was too young and too beautiful to be going through something so awful. (clearly she couldn't' see well because I was dripping in sweat and had on NO make-up) Then we stood there and talked about our husbands for a few minutes. She asked me what happened to Shawn and I told her. Then she asked me if she could ask a question. I told her sure, no problem. She told me that her husband passed away right before Christmas this year and that she doesn't think Christmas will ever be the same. Then she asked me, "You have been a widow a little longer than I have does it ever get easier, do you ever stop missing him because I miss my husband so so much." I sat there looking back at this sweet little old lady with tears in my eyes and responded with, "No I haven't found it to get easier, I think you just learn to come to terms with it. I miss Shawn more and more every day, however you start to have more and more good days and less bad." I told her that I still think about Shawn all the time and will always love him and that is ok. She looked at me gave me another hug and told me that was what she wanted to hear and that she was very happy that the two of us crossed paths today. She turned and walked away, and told me thank you for taking off her necklace because she didn't want to drowned her husband in the pool. She was such a sweet lady and I can't stop thinking about her.

On a happy note I met a new friend today. Jodi from http://ourcrazylife81.blogspot.com has been reading my blog for a while now and I have been reading hers. First we started commenting on each other's blogs. Then we began sending emails to each other. As we started talking we realized that we only live about 20 minutes from each other. We have been trying to set up a lunch date for some time, but could never get our schedules to match. Then this week we got it worked out and met today for lunch. We had a great time and had really good conversation and enjoyed getting to know each other more during lunch. We both said we felt as if we already knew each other from reading our blogs. Funny how you can really get to know someone just by reading about their life through a blog. Anyways we had a great time and I'm sure we will do more things together in the future. It's great to have another friend here back home. Thanks for meeting me today for lunch Jodi, I did have a great time, hope to see you soon.

Ok, this is long (shocking!) and it is really nice outside so I think I'm going to take Bo outside and play with him for a while. As always, thanks for reading!

Being Totally Honest

First off let me start off by apologizing for not writing for over a week. I don't think since I have started blogging that I have gone this long without posting. I wanted to write and post I really did. However, I had a rough start to last week and I tried several times to sit down and write about it, but the words just were not there, so I decided to wait a while and let my mind think a bit. During this last week I have gotten a ton of emails asking if I was ok and why I wasn't posting. I did read and comment during the week, I just didn't post anything myself. For all of you who sent me an email and were worried about me I appreciate it more than you know.

Second, this post is going to be long and it may even be confusing to many of you. Hell, it's my post and my life and it is confusing to me. So if you don't want to read any further I don't blame you. This is the post I talked about on Friday about it being "big". It's not big as in anything really exciting happening to me but it is very big...perhaps huge in content. This is the post where I'm not only being totally honest with all of you, but being totally honest with myself as well. Are you ready...?

I think last Monday morning may have been a turning point for me of sorts. My friend Jennie and I were instant messaging each other back and forth most of the morning. I asked her how her Mother's Day was and she told me. She then asked me how the day was for me. I told her that I didn't think the day was going to bother me. Then I told her I was very wrong and that it was not a good day. Going to church on Mother's Day was a big mistake and just set the tone for my mood all day. I was pissy, upset, and very short all day long, I'm almost 100% sure my family noticed. (Sorry guys) Jennie and I talked on the computer for a little while longer when all of a sudden she told me she was and had been worried about me. She told me that actually her, Lora, Teresa, and "T" had been worried about me for a few weeks now. I asked her why they were all worried about me because I was doing fine. Jennie went on to tell me that they all know I'm doing "fine", and that they are all still so amazed at my strength during the last nine months. However, she went on to tell me that they were all worried that I had become "stuck" during the last month or so. I was saying the same things, I was doing the same thing day after day and my blogs were starting to read the same. They were worried that I was not making any progress in my grief and that my day to day activities were starting to become repetitive. Jennie went on to tell me that she decided to say something because they all wanted to be able to help me and didn't want to see me take steps back instead of forward, even though these next steps maybe some of the hardest.

For one split second I was upset...I didn't want to hear that I wasn't progressing, I didn't want to hear I was stuck, I didn't want to hear my blogs were starting to be the same, and I most definitely didn't want to hear it was maybe time that I start looking for a job, or a hobby of some sorts to get me back out there and to allow for another "distraction" for me. For one split second I was upset...I was upset because they don't know what it feels like everyday to wake up with out your husband, they don't know how scary it is to have your entire life change in a blink of an eye, they don't know the pain I feel everyday because I miss Shawn more tomorrow than I do today. Then just as quickly I realized I couldn't ever in a million years be mad at any of them. They are my best friends and they are trying to help me get through the most difficult thing I have ever gone through. They only want the best for me. How could I be upset? Hell, Jennie has told me a few times that being with me that day in the ER was possibly one of the hardest things she has ever done in her life, that all she could do for me was sit on the couch and hold me while I cried after the doctor told us the news. It made me kind of think that maybe none of this is easy for them as well. So for that one second yes, I was kind of upset but I can honestly tell you it didn't last long. I know they all only want the best for me, they want to help me in any way that they can so I can truly be happy again one day, whatever version of happy I will have. Again, while talking to Jennie I realized how truly blessed I am to have such a great group of friends help me through this horrible situation. I swear if you guys are reading this I am NOT under any circumstances mad at any of you, I love you and thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for me.

Ok are you ready for me to be totally honest with you and myself now? Here it goes....

The first thing I want to share with you all is that what I have learned in 9 months is that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. After going through this I will never judge another person on how they are grieving a loss. Grieving is a completely and totally individual experience. One person may grieve one way, while somebody else will grieve entirely different. However a person does what they need to deal with a death is what needs to be done. You have to grieve and feel what is right for you at that particular moment. It may be one way one day and another way the next, that's why it is called the grieving process. Grieving is a process and I will honestly tell you that dealing with the grief of losing a spouse is a full time job in itself. In one day you can feel so many different thoughts and emotions and that can be totally overwhelming. Your mind never stops processing what has just happened and that your life will never again be what you though it was going to be, you are always thinking about something. If you are reading my blog and have experienced a loss please don't let people tell you how to grieve or how to feel. Feel what you want when you want to. If you want to laugh one minute and then curl up into a bawl and cry four hours later that is totally fine...do that...feel what you need to feel. Sarah has told me from day one that you have to allow yourself to feel everything because without feeling all of those emotions you will not come out on the other side of the mountain and it will be a harder climb. At first I wasn't sure if I believed Sarah when she told me that, but now nine months into it I know it is true. You have to feel the feelings, all of them, even the ones that suck. I think I have probably cried and been upset more within the last month than I have in a long time. (more on that later) In the end just remember when a person is grieving the loss of a spouse, child or whomever there is no right or wrong way. You just have to be there to support them and give a little nudge when needed.

That being said, you want to know what? My friends are right and after really thinking about it I agree and must be honest with myself...I have become "stuck" the last month. I am dealing and I am processing but at the same time I'm not really doing anything if you know what I mean. I get up and I do the same thing day after day. While I have came a long way since September when I moved back to Michigan I know realize I need to take that next step and work on another part of the process. Let me back up just a bit. When I moved back into my parents house in September I did nothing...nothing at all..I would go two or so days without even taking a shower (gross I know). Part of the reasoning there was because frankly I think I was still in shock from losing Shawn, then I found out about the baby and I was scared to go anywhere because I never knew when the miscarriage would happen. After I had my D&C I did start going out but only for a little while at a time, maybe a short trip to the mall. The months of September through much of November left me sitting in my house watching hours and I mean hours of TLC's What Not to Wear. It was one of the only shows I could watch that wouldn't scream "Shawn" at me. So that's what I did, watched TV. December found me in a bit of a better place, that is when I started making my trips back and fourth to Youngstown and spending time with my friends, it is also the time when I woke up one day and realized that I did want to be happy again one day. It really did make me feel better being back with all of them. This winter I finally started doing things back here at home as well. I reconnected with an old high school friend, went out with Sarah and her friends, that have now become my friends, started tanning, and driving back and forth to Youngstown every three to four weeks and generally started getting out of my house more. These were all big things for me and great accomplishments since I was doing none of that during the fall.

However, I have become stuck and after really thinking about it I will also admit that. I really do the same thing day after day with a little variance's in times here and there. Jennie told me that they were concerned that I wasn't progressing and that I was just kind of idling. I told her that I really was doing ok, that they didn't need to worry and that I had already made up my mind I was going to go back to work after the summer was over. I told Jennie that I wanted to try to have "fun" this summer and I didn't want a job getting in the way of that. I wanted to be able to do things when I wanted to do them without having to worry about work. I also went on to tell her that not working right now was "easy" for me. I could have bad days when I needed them without an office full of people looking at me or I could be with my friends and have fun when I wanted to as well. I told her that everything else is so hard right now, losing Shawn is the hardest thing I have ever done and have ever had to deal with, my mind is constantly thinking and processing information that I just wanted it to be easy for a little while longer. I'm lucky enough to be in the position where I don't need to work at this particular moment. Then Jennie told me that they weren't necessarily talking about a full time job for me to jump into that maybe I should start to think of other things that interested me. Something that would give me a distraction of sorts on certain days. Something else to get my mind on.

As much as I hate to admit it to myself my friends are right. I am in a rut and I need to start pulling myself out of it. I think I need to take the next step in the process and do something that will not be easy for me. I need to get back to the point where I'm held accountable for something. I eventually need to get back to the point of being a "responsible adult" that contributes to society. I don't know really what this will be, a new hobby, a part time job, full time job or volunteering, but I do know that I need to start doing something about this and start digging my way out of the rut that I have been in. I think for starters I will just start looking for a part time "fun" job, perhaps somewhere where there is little stress. (does a job like that exist?) A little something where I can still do what I want during the summer for the most part, still have fun but at the same time slowly start working my way back into the working world. I'm also going to really start thinking about going back to school in the fall or winter semester. Maybe I will work during the fall, get some money saved back up and then go back to school in the winter. I know deep down I need to start working, I'm going to be 32 in November, I can't be living with my parents forever. Although living with my parents and sister has been wonderful and I'm extremely grateful that they offered their home to me I do at the same time miss having my own place with my own things. I also know now that I would be just fine living by myself in an apartment or small house. It would be an adjustment, but nothing harder than getting used to living without Shawn. I also know I need to start working for another reason and that is Shawn. I know he would have wanted to to take time off and deal with everything, but at the same time I bet he is starting to wonder when I will get off of my ass and do something again. So that is my "game plan" over the next few weeks I'm going to begin to look for some part time jobs that I could do. I really have a lot of my summer planned, but if I could find something that would be flexible with me until the fall I think that maybe like they said a good distraction for me and would ease me back into working.

Remember up above when I said I have cried more and been upset more the last month than I had in a while? Well again I hate to admit this but it is true. I really not been crying all that much. I'm not sure what but the last several weeks it has not been the case. I have been moody, short tempered, emotional and very very teary. Two weeks ago I was cleaning my room and opened up a box because I wasn't sure what was in it and it was Shawn's baseball glove. Seeing that dirty nasty glove had me in the floor crying. A few days later I had to get something out of a big tub marked "extra bathroom" I opened it up to see Shawn' deodorant and cologne staring back up at me. I took out the deodorant and smelled it, next I took the cap off of Shawn's cologne. I then sprayed it onto his t-shirt that I keep next to my bed. I was fine through all of that, then a hour later I went back into my room and it smelled like Shawn and I totally lost it. Called another one of my best friends Megan and just cried into the phone telling her how much I miss Shawn and that this entire things sucks. Last Monday after talking to Jennie I found myself over at Sarah's house crying on her doorstep. She simply gave me a hug and told me this...."You need to feel all of these things, the tears need to come out" Sarah also told me that she thinks that I maybe grieving harder know that I was before. Not that I wasn't grieving before, because believe me I was. I always thought it would get easier as time went on and to some extent it is, but then there are other things that are harder for me know then they were Shawn first died. I think the finality of it is really begining to set in and the fact that tomorrow marks nine months and the one year mark will be here before I know it. Again, just another way of how each person grieves in a different way.

What I do know is that I really do want to be happy and I do want to find happiness again one day. In what form that happiness comes in I do not yet know. Maybe I will find a career that I never thought I would do, maybe I will fall in love with a great man and still have a family. I really don't know what my future holds for me. Only time will tell and only God knows what the plan is for me. A line in one of Sarah's new song's "Wishin Time Away" says..."purpose in the pain" I have to believe and I try to think everyday for all the pain I have been through there is a purpose and once I figure out what that purpose is I will be happy again. I will tell you this, even though the last few weeks have been harder than others, I really am beginning to look forward to my future as scary and as uncertain as it seems right now.

So for now I ask you this. Over the next few weeks as I try to figure more of "me" out please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I'm going to do the best at taking the next step in this whole process but along the way I know I'm going to get a little scared and I'm willing to wager there are going to be more bad days ahead. However, with you all, my family and the best group of friends anyone could ever ask for I know I will make in through this process and will come out smiling on the other side.

There you have it...a totally honest post and if you stuck with me this long, thank you!

Don't Worry....

Hi guys!! I've had several emails the last few days asking where I have been. Thank you so much for thinking about me.

I have been "here" all week just doing some big time thinking. I wanted to let you all know that there is a post coming...and it will be a "big" one. I have been trying to write it all week, but I'm having problems getting it to come out like I want it to. However, I've been "working" on it on and off today and you should be getting the big post very soon. I would say, sometime this weekend, or Monday at the very latest. I however wanted to update everyone and let you all know that I'm alive and haven't fell off the earth.

Thanks again for your sweet emails. You guys are great! See you soon!

There You'll Be

The last few weeks I have been starting to feel a little guilty. Guilty about "moving on' and about being and finding happiness once again. I have really been thinking what it will be like to truly love another man. Or will it even be possible to love another man like I loved Shawn. As painful as it still is everyday to live without Shawn I am starting to look forward to the future, even though that future is scary as hell for me to think about. I am not living the life I wanted to live at 31 years old. I never thought I would have to find happiness once again. I had it in Shawn and in our marriage and in our perfect little family of two and that is the only thing I ever wanted. Then on August 18, everything changed. My world as I had known it had come to a crashing halt. Now almost 9 months later I am really starting to look at my future and want to be happy again. I'm only 31 why shouldn't I be happy again one day? So with all of this thinking I have started to feel a little guilty about being happy. Shawn and I never talked about the "what if's". What if I died suddenly? What if he died suddenly? We never told each other to remarry..to live again...to have a family...to be happy. I know deep down Shawn would want me to be happy, that is all he ever wanted is for me to be happy. However, thinking of being wonderfully happy again one day makes me feel a bit guilty. Then last night I read my friend Sarah's blog. http://sarahschieber.blogspot.com/2009/05/funny-little-saying.html. Sarah and I have talked about this before but I think it was perfect timing for me to read about the guilt and about "moving on" As I read her blog last night I again got all teary, just as I had when her and I talked about falling in love again.

Well today I was at the gym working out. I was in the process of an uphill climb on the elliptical machine when I was getting sick of listening to my pop music. I switched my IPod to play Faith Hill songs instead and was jamming away when all of a sudden I heard a song that I had not heard in a long time. It was the song "There You'll Be" from the Pearl Harbor sound track. (the song made me bawl even way back then) I haven't heard the song since Shawn died. There I was on my machine really listening to the words while I was working out. As I listened the tears began to roll down my face. Yup, bawled my eyes out while I was working out in the gym. (That's got to be a new one) I was sweating so hard nobody could see me cry. I listened to the song the once and then I replayed it. This time I didn't cry but just thought about how true the words of the song really are. I'm including the video now so you can watch it and then i will type the lyrics after the video for those who don't want to watch.

"There You'll Be"

When i think back on these times
And the dreams we left behind
I'll be glad 'cause I was blessed to get to have you in my life

When I look back on these days
I look and see your face
You were right there for me

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am, there you'll be
And everywhere I am, there you'll be

You know you showed me how it feels
To feel the sky within my reach
And I always will remember all the strength you gave to me

Your love made me make it through
Oh, I owe so much to you
You were right there for me

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be

'Cause I always saw in you my light my strength
And I want to thank you now for all the ways
You were right there for me, you were right there for me always

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am, there you'll be
And everywhere I am, there you'll be

There you'll be

Ok...I hope none of you are crying right now. Making you all cry is not my intent. I just wanted to share with you my feelings and what has been on my mind lately.

I think just like when I read Sarah's post I needed to hear this song. I needed to hear that wherever I will be, Shawn will always always be a part of me. I was so grateful and so blessed to be with Shawn for 12 years and to be his wife for almost 8 years. Every step of the way Shawn was always there for me. I know that there will always be a place in my heart for Shawn for the rest of my life. Shawn always made me feel like I could do anything in the entire world that I wanted to do whether it was easy or hard...he always believed in me and never allowed me to give up. Shawn always told me the sky is the limit for my career and to follow my dreams. I do owe so much to Shawn. I really feel I am who I am today because of him and what he did for my life. I learned so much from him.

My favorite line is this song is " 'Cause I always saw in you my light and my strength". Since the moment Shawn died I knew I had to be strong or at least try to be. I have been amazed at myself with how I have handled everything that has happened to me the last almost 9 months. I thought for sure I would have caved and never left my room. Don't get me wrong I have had my days and I still do. However, for the most part I do have good days. I know my good days and how I have handled losing Shawn and our baby are contributed to the amount of strength that Shawn instilled in me. He made me as strong as I am and I owe him so much for that. I wish there was a way I could thank Shawn for all the ways he was there for me.

Maybe finding true love and happiness again one day is a way that I can thank him. Shawn taught me how to live and more importantly he taught me how to love. What a better way to thank Shawn than by getting to show another man what true love and living is all about. When the time does come for me to find true love I know I will be forever grateful to the man and to our life because of what I have gone through with losing Shawn. Maybe being truly grateful for life is just another way I can thank Shawn for everything he has done for me and for my life.

I love you Shawn, I always will and thank you.

An Award and 8X8

Wow I can't believe it, I have been awarded another blogging award. I have been given the "Your Blog is Super" Award from a good blogging friend Amy http://keepingupwiththeschultzfamily.blogspot.com/. Amy is always doing fun and exciting things over on her blog. You should all stop by and say "hi" sometime. I now have to give this award to 5 people who I think have super blogs. These 5 blogs I read every day (well every new post) The awards go too....

1. Jodi at http://ourcrazylife81.blogspot.com/- I don't really remember how Jodi and I met. I'm betting through a blog that we both read. Anyways, Jodi always leaves me the best comments on my blog. The two of us actually only live a town apart and have been trying to meet all winter. Maybe one day soon we will be able to hook up somewhere.

2. Emily at http://emily-neurohr.blogspot.com/- I had been reading Emily's blog for a while and never left a comment. Then one day I did and we have both been leaving comments since. Emily is a great gal and by reading her blog I know we would be friends if we lived closer to each other. Oh she is going to be having a baby girl in the next few months and will be naming her Cate.

3. Kristen at http://toddandkristin.blogspot.com/- I have been reading Kristen's blog for a while now. Again, I'm not sure where we met in cyberspace but we now chat on Facebook as well. I'm getting to know Kristen more and more with every status update.

4. Jayme at http://thewonderfulworldofjayme.blogspot.com/- Jayme and I just figured out the other day that we have been talking to each other for a little over one year. We first met each other on the WebMd trying to conceive message boards. We both have gone through our fair share of crap and have been there for each other along the way.

5. Sara at http://lifegoeson-mylife.blogspot.com/- Sara and I met through another blog. Sara is now pregnant with a little girl her and her husband are going to name Payton. I love reading about her life and her sweet baby girl.

Ok, now on to my 8X8- I was tagged by another blogging buddy Morgan at http://morganseverydaylife.blogspot.com/ for this. I may have done this before on my blog but I just don't remember and don't feel like going back through my old posts to find out. If I have done this before I'm willing to wager some of my answers maybe a little different. Hope you enjoy learning more about me, especially if you are a newer reader.

A Good Weekend but With a Sigh

Well it's Sunday evening and I thought I'd share my weekend with you. All in all I had a good weekend. I laughed, had fun and enjoyed myself. However, even though I had a good weekend, it was still a weekend that left me with an empty feeling of sorts. You guessed it, that is where the sigh comes in.

Friday night I really didn't do much of anything. I started to clean my bedroom, but got overcome by some boxes that still needed to be unpacked and quickly gave up on the idea of cleaning. With that I got on the computer and messed around reading different blogs and spending or wasting time rather on Facebook. (that Facebook thing is so addicting) Not an overly exciting night but I did get caught up on some blogs and found several other new ones to read as well.

Saturday I was off to Holland, Michigan with my family to spend the day at the Tulip Festival. My brother and his girlfriend Erika live about 45 minutes from Holland so we met them at their house and then all went to the Tulip Festival together. I have never seen so many tulips, wooden shoes, or people dressed up in Dutch outfits as I did on Saturday. I had never been to the Tulip Festival before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Pretty much the entire town is dedicated to people of Dutch origin, wooden shoes and tulips. People were everywhere! When we first got there I started to feel a little anxious for some reason. I never used to get that way before, but ever since Shawn died I have a tendency to get slightly anxious when I get where there are lots of people. I really don't know why, but it happens, I think it is a grief thing. So for a while I walked a head of my family and tried not to get lost in the crowd. As we walked we saw what the Tulip Festival was all about. There was a carnival going on at one end of town, stands of food set up on almost every corner, Dutch people walking around in authentic Dutch clothes, a huge art show set up in the middle of town and a variety of spots where you could watch Dutch people dance and sing in their wooden shoes. When we first got there we watched a group of young children dance in their wooden shoes while singing songs in Dutch. I didn't understand a word they were saying but they did a great job for being as young as they all were.
After we watched the children dance we decided to walk through the exhibits in the art fair. My dad and brother were very excited about this (not!) There were tons and tons of different vendors there selling everything from artwork to soap. There was also tons and tons of people walking around as well. I couldn't help but notice all of the couples that were there together. Some we young adults, some were middle aged, some had children with them and some were old but they were all there with the person that they loved. I was happy seeing all of these people together and was happy for them, I really was, but at the same time it gave me this horrible empty feeling inside of me. Insert the sigh here. Yes, even though I was having a good day, a day with laughter I was also still feeling the pain of missing Shawn. Even though I was with my family and hundreds and hundreds of other people I have never really felt more alone as I did during parts of Saturday while walking around town and the festival. This is something that nobody can help me with, it is a feeling of loneliness and pain that I have to deal with on my own. Insert sigh here.

As we were walking in the art fair I began to smell it....the aroma of Kettle popped Pop Corn. This is one of my all time favorite snacks to eat at fairs or outdoor events like this. Anytime Shawn and I would go to an outdoor event like this Shawn would always buy me my own big bag. I would of course share with him, but would end up eating most of the bag on my own. I found the stand where they were making the Kettle Corn and I stood in line for almost 25 minutes to get my own big bag. Standing in line in front of me was one of those "happy/cute" couples. They were actually really sweet but I was having a hell of a time looking at them. Again, I was happy for them, I was happy that they had each other and happy that they could depend on each other. At the same time watching them made me miss even more all of those things that Shawn and I used to do for each other, it made me miss what I had just a short 8 1/2 months ago. It made me miss all of the great things about being married. The husband was standing in line letting his wife lean back against him, all while he was rubbing the small of her back. Shawn would always let me lean against him if we were standing in a long line for something. Insert sigh again. Once we all finally got up to the front of the line the couple turned and looked at me and told me to have a great day. I smiled at them and told them do to the same. Little did they know that while yes, I was having a good day it was now my "new" type of good day, not the type of good days that I used to love when at the end of a great day I got to crawl into bed next to Shawn and tell him that I loved him. However, when I got into bed last night I did tell Shawn that I loved him, but it wasn't the same. I had a great day and did have lots of fun and it was nice to do something different but there were many sighs during the day.

Since we were gone all day yesterday and due to the fact that Bo was up puking during the night (no more hot dogs for Bo) I decided not to go to church today. It did feel really good to sleep in this morning. Things were going great this morning until I came home from tanning. Then all of a sudden I was driving and I heard a little ding ding sound coming from the dashboard of my new car. My brand new 2009 car, the car with only 15,000 miles on it. I looked down and saw that both the ABS light and brake lights were on. Then all of the lights were on for the All Wheel Drive. I just sat at the stop sign looking at my dashboard in disbelief. What can be wrong with a brand new car. I tell you I just don't understand my luck. Insert another big sigh here. I came home and my dad reset the lights and everything seems to be fine, but I will be calling the dealership in the morning just to make sure. I tell you...I just don't understand my luck.

This afternoon however was an afternoon filled with hope. There were sighs as well, but they were the good type of sigh, the type of sigh that gave me hope and reminded me that I will be ok and happy again one day. Even though I have gone to concert's of Sarah's before I went to another one today. Sarah's new CD "The Long October Road" is being released on May 29 so she is doing several concerts in the city to promote her CD and to tell her story of grief, healing, hope and finding happiness once again. For those of you who have not read her blog please do so. She has so much to share and tells her story in such a graceful way. Oh and if you read her latest blog post you can even hear a little snip it of one of her new songs. http://sarahschieber.blogspot.com/

Over the last 6 months Sarah has become one of my dearest friends and like Jennie, Lora, and Meg she has been there for me on my hard days and has gotten several phone calls with me crying on the other end. Sarah gets it, she knows exactly how I'm feeling. For whatever reason and only God knows why Sarah and I share the same story. Both of our husbands died totally unexpectedly and we are left to live on without them, we were left to work through our grief and to find happiness again one day.

At 4:00 Sarah took the stage and began to share her story with the audience. Like I said she has told me her story, her and I have talked at length about it and I have heard her words in concert before. However, that still did not stop me from tearing up as she began her talk and started singing. The first song she sang today was the title track called "The Long October Road" I've heard the song several times before and I love it. As soon as I heard the first note of the song I got a big lump in my throat. Sarah sang a few more songs before she started telling her story...the story of the great life she had with her husband Chad...the story of Chad's death....the story of her grief...and the story of how she got to the place she is in today. Hey! Did you hear? Last Friday Sarah got engaged to an awesome man and they will be married in the middle of August!! Even though Sarah has suffered pain and loss that I truly hope none of you ever have to experience she has once again found happiness and is smiling a big smile once again. Sarah has been truly blessed by another wonderful man to love and who loves her right back. What an awesome feeling!! I'm so so happy for her. After sharing her story Sarah sang a few more songs off of her new CD. This is such a great and powerful CD and I've listened to it about a million times. The words to many of the songs really hits close to home for me.
After listening to Sarah's story yet again and listening to her sing it does give me the feeling and hope that I will get through this and that I will one day again be truly happy. Going to Sarah's concert this afternoon was a really great way to end a good weekend. Insert the good happy type of sigh right here!

Bo's Turn

Guys..I'm sorry as you read on in this post, for some reason it is one huge paragraph and it won't let me add space between them. I've tried several times. Sorry I know it is hard to read that way, just wanted to let you know.

I've been saying for a while now I was going to write about Bo. However, Bo has been kind of pushed to the side this week because I have had other things....such as horrible bad days I've wanted to write about instead. Sorry Bo, I know you took a back burner on the blog. Several of you have emailed me asking about how he has been. So this is for you, a post all about Bo!

Last Friday Bo went to his first day of Puppy Camp. I know this sounds totally ridiculous but Bo LOVED it! I had several things I needed to do last Friday so I thought it would be a perfect day for him to go. I dropped him off at 9:00 in the morning and picked him up at 6:00. While he was there he got to play with other dogs is size. He loves to play with other dogs so this was a really good way for him to interact. The owners of Puppy Camp also do several activities with the dogs during the day. Bo went on a bike ride, went for a walk and I think they even took him roller blading that afternoon. The place really is great. They have 3 outdoor play areas, one for puppies, one for bigger dogs, and then one for older dogs. Each dog also has it's own little cubby to store it's belongings for the day. It is like daycare for dogs. Who would have thought! Anyways Bo loved it and was soo very tired that night when he got home. The following are a few pic's I took the night he came home. This was taken right before he went to sleep that night. He curled up on my bed and could hardly keep his little eyes open.
Out cold!!!

Just leave me alone, I played so hard today!

He didn't care who was looking or who was taking picture's of him. He rolled onto his back and fell asleep this way.
Nobody touch my Kong...It's mine...all mine
Last but not least Bo's 7 month picture. (No I don't take pictures of him every month, this just happened to be his 7 month b-day)
Ok, what else can I tell you about my "perfect" little Boston Terrier. Oh I have something for you....How about he isn't perfect!!!! I think if Bo was a human he would be in the toddler stage of development. He is going on a little wild streak the last few weeks and is into EVERYTHING. If there is something in his reach then he will get it and run away with it. I actually think he has springs hidden in his back legs because even if he can't reach what he wants he will jump on his back legs and do this little jump/dive thing and get it. I tried to write this post a few hours ago but every time I sat down the little guy was into everything. Newspaper, plants, pot holders, rugs, pillows, shoes, you name it he will put it in his mouth and run with it, ripping it to shreds in the process. Well, all besides his toys. He won't play with his toys unless someone is playing with him. I guess you could say he doesn't play well on his own.
There are times when he knows his name and will turn his little head to look at you. Then there are the times when you call his name and he just runs in the other direction and acts like he doesn't know you are talking to him. I told him just a few minutes ago it was a good thing he is so cute, because he sure was being a naughty little puppy a few hours ago. I guess I wouldn't say that Bo is a bad dog by any stretch of the imagination, however he does have a wild streak in him as of late. It is kind of funny because when we are down in Youngstown he doesn't really act like he does here at home. I think it's because he always has the boys (his brothers) to play with when we are there and the four boys do a great job of keeping him busy and tired! More than anything I think it is the "Terrier" in him. It sure hasn't helped the last few days that it has been raining like crazy and he can't go outside.
Lucky for us...mainly me because I'm starting to run out of patience with him we will be starting round two of puppy class next week. I'm taking him to a different person this time. We will be going to where Bo goes to Puppy Camp. When I took Bo last week the guy had Bo sitting and staying within two minutes of him being there. I have no idea what he did, but it worked. The guy is like my own little Dog Whisper! I've been working on sitting and staying with Bo since Christmas. I'm starting to think I may have spoiled Bo a little too much when he was really young, either that or I really have NO idea on how to raise a "good" dog. I by no means want a show dog. I would just like a nice little dog that sits and stays when I tell him, comes when he calls, and doesn't jump. I know Bo is still a puppy but I think the two of us have a lot to work on the next few months. Please wish us luck...I think we need it.
Oh for those of you who are still wondering...yes, Bo still sleeps with me in my bed. He starts off the night in his cage, but then usually ends up crying to come into my bed anywhere from mid-night -2:00. According to the new trainer it is just fine to let your dog sleep with you. Phew!! Bo is also still very much attached to me. The other day I left for a while and my Mom said that Bo just sat staring at the door for the longest time, when she took him outside he went to the spot where I park my car and just sat there. When I come in the door Bo takes off running to me with his little ears tucked down in excitement. It really is about the cutest little thing and does make me feel loved. The other night as I was bawling my eyes out while falling asleep Bo kept looking at me. He was at the end of the bed, but after a few minutes he came up to my pillow, looked at me with his little head tilt and then licked all of my tears off of my face, then he curled up right by my neck and slept there the entire night, something he hasn't done in a very long time.
Even though my little Bo is being a big-ole-pain right now I really do love the little guy and I'm so glad that I got him...he really has helped me a lot the last several months.
Ok...an entire....long post all about Bo! Stay tuned for the next Bo update and if any of you have any great training ideas, especially those of you who have Boston Terrier's I'd sure love to hear them.
