The last four dreadful and long years of my life and I have awaited "that time of the month" with a lot of anticipation. I had hoped it would finally be "our" turn and longed to hold an infant, my infant, in my empty arms. Things never would turn out quite how we had hoped, but we were indeed blessed with the way things eventually happened. Because the Jax-Man is five, I haven't had an infant in my home for half of a decade. There seems to be a few things that I forgot about over those years.
Behold, I give you my top ten things having a newborn has (RE)taught me.
1.)
Infant socks evaporate. Who knew that you could start with thirty pair of socks, do laundry and end up with ten?
2.)
Dad's vomit reflex is way over exaggerated. How can you seriously clean a dog kennel, fart like a dinosaur, fume up my bathroom daily and enjoy the smell of McGraths Fish House, yet not be able to stomach an infants formula filled dirty diaper? This boggles me. Seriously.
3.)
Arriving home by 5:00, having dinner ready to eat by 8:00 and getting all kiddos comfortably tucked into bed by 11:00 is a HUGE mother of an accomplishment. On those rare days, I proudly make myself a huge bowl of ice cream and watch reruns of The Bachelor online. I believe I deserve it.
4.)
The cutest outfits only get worn once before the little chitlin has grown too big for it. I don't understand. The ugly hand me downs from an older brother, fit for ages and I almost want to purposely ruin them so I can whip out the next size up of cute clothes again.
5.)
You CAN survive on less than three hours of sleep. I would not recommend it and I am sure my family steers clear of me on those days, but it is entirely possible, despite what I have always believed.
6.)
It takes nearly eight times longer to get an extra little person ready for the day. I used to get everything ready and head out of the door for work in fifteen minutes. Now, it takes up to two hours. That is when the kiddos are still asleep. When they are awake and helping, it can take upwards of four to six hours.
7.)
"Me" time now consists of washing bottles, onesies, spit up rags and rear-ends mostly in the quiet, cold, and darkened basement.
8.)
Constipated babies can only be compared to a root canal without novacaine. With the help of my dear pediatrician, I have discovered that one ounce daily of prune juice is a good regulator. Plus, it makes for good conversation when company comes over.
9.)
If you put off meal time an extra hour for your own selfish benefit, it will come back and bite you in the butt. You will not, I repeat, you will not get in an extra hour of sleep. The child will wake up at the same blasted time and want the same blasted amount of formula.
10.)
Infants can do severe damage to ones caffeine addiction. Why is it so incredibly hard to stop at the Sinclair for a refill? Because not only do you have to lug around a car seat with you, you have to use your other hand to hold your refill, your candy bar, your other sons sixlets and bug juice and your wallet, not to mention the inevitable occasion where the infant demands his binki at that exact moment. What happened to the gas stations with a drive up window? I miss those.
I love my little kiddos and enjoy every moment with them though. I think that is what makes it all worth it. Those little varmits sure bring a lot of extra blessings, love and enjoyment to our family.
