Since We've Been Home

Scott gave him his first bath

This picture makes me laugh. I think he looks like a grandpa in it.

Look at those big hands and feet! He gets those from his dad. We will post a picture of him by this lion every month so you can see how big he's getting. He's 9 days old here.

He is always making us laugh with all his cute faces he pulls.

Under the Lights

Two days after we took Boston home we had to take him back to the doctor to test his billirubin level and we found out it was in the high risk zone so the doctor ordered at- home phototherapy treatment to treat his jaundice. It was so sad because he had to stay in there 24 hours a day and the only time we could take him out was to feed him. The first time we tried to put the glasses on him and put him in the little suitcase looking thing he screamed his little head off. That was the first time I had really heard him cry. Before that it was just cute little cries, but this was the first time I really heard him cry. It was so sad and it made me cry too because I really didn't want to put him in there. That meant I couldn't cuddle with him anymore and have him sleep in his bassinet by my bed. He was under the lights from Saturday until Tuesday. We had to take him to the doctor everyday to test his billirubin level and finally on Tuesday for his one week birthday the doctor told us it was low enough that we could take him out. We were so excited to finally get to hold him again, especially Scott because I had plenty of holding time while I was feeding him every two hours, but the only thing Scott had gotten to do was change his diapers.

The phototherapy treatment is supposed to help them poop a lot to get rid of the extra billirubin, and it definitely worked! We can't believe how many diapers we went through while he was doing the phototherapy. We changed at least one and a lot of the time two diapers every two hours. This was the routine: I would take him out to feed him and Scott would change his diaper and then play with him and make him do jumping jacks and all sorts of things to wake him up to eat because the jaundice made him really sleepy. Then I would feed him and he would usually be trying to go to the bathroom while I was feeding him and I would laugh at his funny faces and noises, then we would burp him, change him again, and put him back under the lights for two more hours until we did the routine again.

Here is his happy dad on his one week birthday finally getting to cuddle with him and watch the Jazz game with him because he didn't need the phototherapy anymore!

Scott is such a cute dad and so willing to help. He has changed way more diapers than I have. I'm usually about to fall asleep by the time I'm done feeding him so Scott usually burps him and changes him.

Here is little Boston chillin in the lights

He loves to fold up like a pretzel. It is so cute! I LOVE this picture!

He looks so precious sleeping on his side all cuddled up on his hands. We can't stop taking pictures of this cute little guy.

Our little snowboarder dude. He eventually got used to the glasses and phototherapy bed. He is a very mellow and sweet baby.

He makes us laugh with his funny faces after he eats. This is one of his "I'm stuffed" faces.

Who Does Boston Look Like?

Look at my pictures and those of my parents below.
Then comment on who you think I look like.

I think this picture looks the most like me (Andrea) and the one above it looks the most like Scott.

Now that you have a few good pictures of me,
look at my mom and dad when they were babies.

Bringing Home Our Teddy Bear

Scott and I love having our baby home with us! It is so fun! And the sleep deprivation is more than worth it to me.

We borrowed our friends Shane and Shannon's car seat to take him home because we ordered ours online and it was still in the mail.

Here's The Story

This is going to be really long, but I just want to make sure I have something to look back on in case I forget anything, although it would really surprise me if I forget even the tiniest detail of this sweet little baby's arrival.

Friday Jan. 16: Scott and I went to the movies and I was having a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions throughout the whole movie. They were stronger than the usual ones I frequently had and they were also more painful. We thought about counting them and timing them, but decided that we didn't need to because I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions since I was about 24 weeks so it wasn't anything too unusual to us.

Sunday Jan.18: I was having terrible back pain. I had to get up during sacrament meeting and sunday school to walk around. I'm pretty sure the back pain was little Boston moving his way down into my pelvis. I noticed I had more room below my rib cage.

Monday Jan. 19: I had to get up at six to go to work and I was really not happy about that because it was a holiday and Scott didn't have school and I really just wanted to stay home with him and rest. I expected to be dead tired during the day but I felt strangely energetic. After work Scott and I went to my 36 week check-up. Dr. Thorpe checked my cervix and told me I was dilated to a two and 80% effaced. I was really excited that all those Braxton Hicks contractions were actually doing something. I asked Dr. Thorpe if he could induce me a week early becasue Scott was going out of town ten days after my due date. He said with first babies they can't induce until a week after your due date becasue it increases the chanceof a C-section. After the Dr. appointment Scott and I went to our weekly prenatal class at the hospital. As part of the class we pre-registered so we could go straight to the delivery room when we were ready to deliver (how convenient). When we got home we were watching some TV and I was having regular contractions that were pretty painful, but I didn't have to breathe through them. We actually counted them this time and I had at least eight in an hour. I still didn't think I should go to the hospital, but I decided I would get up and pack my bags for the hospital just in case. After I did that we went to bed.

Tuesday Jan. 20: I woke up a few times during the night with painful contractions, but I just kept trying to go back to sleep. At 5:30 am my contractions were too painful to try to sleep through so I got up and showered and paced around the condo breathing through my contractions. I still wasn't sure if I was actually in labor. I just REALLY REALLY didn't want to go to the hospital and suffer the dissapointment of getting sent home. I woke Scott up at 7:30 and told him I was really hurting and having a lot of contractions. I told him he should shower and get his things ready for the hospital just in case. By the time we were all packed and ready to go to the hospital it was 8:30. We were planning on putting in a movie and counting my contractions for awhile, but by then I was sure that we needed to go to the hospital. I had about 4 or 5 contractions in the car on the way to the hospital and I had Scott time them. They were one minute long and four minutes apart. We couldn't believe that we were actually going to have a baby that day! I think we were in denial until the nurse told us that it was the real thing. It still felt like a dream though. I kept asking Scott, "Is this for real?"

I was already dilated to a five when I got to the hospital. The nurses were surprised that I waited so long to come to the hospital especially because it was my first baby. I was scared about getting an epidural, but the nurse talked to me about all my concerns and made me feel more at ease about getting one. My biggest concern was not being able to move my legs becasue that really freaks me out, but she said they could give me a low dose and make sure I could still move my legs just fine. So I decided to get the epidural a couple hours after I got to the hospital. I was dilated to about a 6 by the time they got it in. It was the best decision ever! I loved it! I just hung out and realxed after that and time flew by! I was dilated to a ten before I knew it and it was time to push the baby out!

Little Boston was posterior (face up) which makes it harder for him to come out, so the doctor turned him two different times, but he turned back. This made the pushing a lot longer and harder. I pushed for 2 1/2 hours and I was so tired! His heart rate started to drop after contractions so the doctor decided we needed to pull him out with the forceps.

I had been seeing a team of five doctors for my check-ups and the doctor working at the time of my delivery was Dr. Thorpe, the doctor I had seen at 5:30 the night before. When he came in I said "I guess you don't have to worry about inducing me a week early anymore." He just laughed and said, "Ya I guess not." After a big episiotomy and some pulling with the forceps our precious little Boston was finally here at 4:34pm on January 20, 2009!

Boston weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz. and was 20" long, but some of his lenghth was due to the major cone-head he had from being pulled out by the forceps. He is healthy and the cutest thing I have ever seen. I am already so addicted to him. He had some struggles with his blood sugar the first night so they had to poke his heel every 3 hours and check it. At one point his blood sugar was a 27 and they said if it got to a 25 they would have to take him to the NICU. They gave him a bottle and his blood sugar improved, so thankfully he didn't have to go to the NICU. The next day his blood sugar was doing great! He is still doing really well and is a sweet, content baby.

Just Like Daddy!

Boston already decided he wants to be just like his daddy! He surprised us by coming three weeks early just like his dad did. We didn't quite have everything as ready as we would have liked, but we couldn't be more happy that our adorable baby is here and healthy!

Here are some pictures. I'll just save my labor story for the end since everyone just wants to see the pictures anyway.

Such a sweet face! The red marks on his cheeks are from getting pulled out by the forceps because he was posterior.

Getting checked out by the NICU team in case he swallowed a little meconium. He had a major cone-head and it was a lopsided cone-head too because his head was tilted to the side when he came out.

This is me feeling much better after the epidural. It was the best thing ever. I could have fallen asleep while I was waiting to be fully dilated, but I didn't want to miss anything.

Holding baby Boston for the first time! He kept opening his mouth and sticking his tongue in and out. It was so cute!

Proud daddy holding his baby for the first time!

First bath

He already has really long feet also just like his dad.

Here is a perfect shot of his lopsided cone-head. His head has already gone back to the normal round shape just one day later.

I love his cute little bottom lip

He sucks his finger instead of his thumb. It is so adorable! This is my favorite picture.

His daddy wrapped him up really good
