The Story
is it about time i posted something? i know, i know. there's just so much to share and not enough time ...or hands (i'm typing one handed so i don't wake up the baby). i'll at least try to start off with "the story".
Ruby worried us from the beginning by being too scrawny (she had iugr) so after countless tests and ultrasounds our doctor said we needed to induce labor 3 weeks early. this way she could put on weight and get nutrients that she wasn't getting in "the oven". it's been working by the way. she's put on quite a lot of weight in only 3 weeks! has it already been 3 weeks?! holy cow!
please be patient with our home videos. apparently, neither of us can work a camera.
driving to the hospital:
i was checked in to the hospital to be induced february 28 at 8:30 pm. they started the induction and told me to try to sleep that night in the delivery room (not a chance!). i got an hour of sleep that night. the next day they went through a series of procedures to get my labor progressing but nothing was working. i was hoping i could go without an epidural but after 25 hours i couldn't get past 3 centimeters, i was exhausted, and the doctor said it was about time to try something else. i got the epidural at around 9:00 pm and it took a little over an hour to kick in. the nurse checked me around 10:20 and said i had already gone from a 3 to a 9 1/2 and it was time to try pushing. 19 super-fast minutes later we had our little girl.
she gave us another scare because the cord was wrapped around her neck twice so she wasn't breathing and had to be rushed to the nicu. she was a little trooper and bounced back quickly so i could finally hold her around 4:00 am.
after being home for less than 24 hours we found out that our little love had jaundice and had to have phototherapy. for any parent who has had a baby with jaundice i sympathize with you. phototherapy is a treatment that requires you leave your baby undressed in a "bili-briefcase" (looks like a mini tanning bed) 24 hours a day with their eyes covered with gauze and stay on constant watch. it broke my heart.
thankfully she was jaundice-free within a few days so we could ditch the briefcase and finally cuddle our new baby.
