Engagement Party

Restored carriage house at Ellerbeck Mansion where we had our engagement party

Emily & Chance

I loved this table (especially those gorgeous roses and that beautiful lantern from Pier 1), but not sure anyone really had time to notice it. Funny how much time it took for me to plan all the details. The poem in the frame is by Neurda and the brown book is a collection of Neruda poems (from my college days). Jeremy chose a Neruda poem to read to me on Valentines day and I knew then and there he was something special.

Trying to keep the hot chocolate bar up and running proved to be the one part of the evening that didn't go smoothly (yes the crock pot has to be on!) but the incredible caramels and Kneaders desserts were a hit

So lovely to see all our friends who came and filled up all the chairs. I'm lucky to have had such good friends over the years. The slideshow in the background is a testament to Jeremy's enduring patience (it took him several hours over several nights to get it perfected for me).... as well as the quality of friends I have (Emily & Chance helped us get it burned to DVD). We loved sharing it with everyone.

Seattle graduation vacation

Jeremy and I met up in Seattle for three days to have a little vacation and attend his graduation. First we drove by his old house and fun reminiscing about his experiences at psychiatric hospitals in Seattle. The sun came out just in time for us to spend an hour or two walking around Greenlake. We watched the kayakers, heron, and turtles. Beautiful afternoon!
Next we made our way over to the West Point Lighthouse at Discovery Park. This is the least visitor friendly lighthouse I've visited, but the views were great and it was nice to be down on the beach for a bit.
Saturday, we headed out to the Space Needle for brunch. Extraordinary views, a nice restaurant (it rotates so you get a 360 degree view from your table), a quick nap on the grass were the perfect way to spend the afternoon. We could even see Mount Rainier in the distance.
That evening was Jeremy's graduation from his psychiatry residency. He spent two years in Seattle and two years in Boise through the UW program. So proud of him for making it through 8 years of school with a smile on his face!
Sunday we went to church in downtown Seattle and then headed out to Bridal Veil Falls. This involved a lot more driving that we had expected (especially considering the traffic jam on the way home). But the forest and falls were amazing and nothing like what you find here in Utah. I enjoyed putting my new raincoat to use (birthday present from J).
We both had a nice weekend in Seattle, especially since we didn't have to do any work or school and could just enjoy our time together. Obviously we had a lot of time to take pictures of each other, but it sure is fun with his fancy camera (until about the 100th picture, and then I'm not the most willing participant). Good times!

Remembering Jeralee

I wrote this at age 18, but now feel inclined to share it publically.

Memorial Day
written Winter 2003

Faded memories and a familiar pain
condense to droplets of sadness
suspended in air
scented by lilacs cut from grandma's yard
and reverently placed on the headstone
where dirt is carefully washed away from each letter
and dead yellow grass is brushed from grooves
of ballet slippers and numbers that frame her
eleven years;

her life like the bright sparkle of sunlit winter frost,
a source of light still shimmering in tears
of the cousin surviving today in grandpa's arms
and tears falling across the freckles of the pony tailed sister.
When, in the silence, broken only by prayer,
the drops fall, one-by-one, and ripple
in an ocean of faith—each drop reflecting
a little more light.

Some of my favorite things in spring!

green scenic views, hammock time with J., the smell of lilacs, sister time, that two year old face, blossoms!

Moving on and Learning the Organ

I recently made the move out of the single's ward *gasp* and into a family ward. No, I'm not quite old enough to be kicked out yet, but it just felt like time. Maybe this had something to do with having been in 13 different singles wards (and not feeling especially involved in my last one). Yep I counted them:
2 BYU-Idaho singles wards with Bishop Hart and a cool Bishop from sugar city (first and only after dark toilet papering fun during fhe with the bishop. Calling: Enrichment leader)
A few horrible months in a nearly all girls singles branch in West Yellowstone
A brief few stints in a Weber State singles ward
On and off member of the Weber River ward (Bishop Wright and Bishop Randall with some good times, especially back in the day. Callings: Family history and Sunday School teacher)
BYU Southridge 100ish singles ward (met my first boyfriend here; almost turned in my mission papers in this ward. A member of the bishopric ended up paying for a good deal of my mission.)
Colonial 2nd ward (loved adventuring with my friends from this ward. Calling: Enrichment committee)
BYU Old Mill ward (Bishop McGarr. Joined the ward choir because the boys were cute)
BYU Elms 100ish ward with my sister (fun times)
Avenues singles wards: Ensign mega ward, Ensign divided (calling: sunday school teacher), City Creek (calling: relief society pianist), & Emigration YSA wards (out of which I loved Ensign mega ward and Bishop Olsen the best)

So now I'm a member of the 27th ward in SLC. I soon after moving in volunteered myself to learn the organ to play in sacrament meeting. After having three organists move out, and having just moved in myself, it was more than just good timing. In fact after being so welcomed by the Bishop and his wife, along with other members of the relief society, it definitely feels like the right place to be.

Plus the chapel is 100+ years old and has these beautiful stained glass windows and an awesome organ with real pipes. Still getting the hang of how to actually use those pipes to make the right kind of sounds, but my first time playing in sacrament meeting today went pretty well (at least my mom and dad thought so). Not planning on staying in salt lake past the end of the year, but I'm glad to have found a great ward in which to finish out my time here.

Spring Break in Zion

What a contrast this post is from the last. This one captures 70+ degree sunshine heaven, and the last one captured near freezing snowmobiling winter adventures. I will admit I'm partial to the first. Our first day we made the trek up to Angel's landing.
Jeremy captured the view, the heights, and the excitement of the climb up to the top.
Loving the sun and the view from 1500 feet up.
Our second day was a hike called East Rim. There were some cool canyon formations, but we didn't find the slot canyon adventures at the end of the trail we were hoping to find. Still, it was good hike with good company. And a perfect break from school and SLC. Here's to more hiking adventures to come this year!
