Primary activity March 25, 2007

Last Saturday there was a primary activity. The kids learned about fire safety among other things. I dropped David off at 9:30 and returned at 10:30 with Timothy, to get some pictures of the kids on the fire engine that was scheduled to stop by. However the unit had been called away and wasn't there. They sadly ate their snack and we headed home around 11:00. But just as I left the church parking lot I saw a fire engine drive by slowly. So I turned the corner and drove back into the parking lot. The kids were thrilled that the fire engine had made it after all. So we let them climb all over it for about a half an hour. Here are some pictures of the fun event.

When Aaron found out he wasn't going on splits last night we took a family trip to the local hardware store and picked up a couple bucks worth of things to fix our broken shelf. After I put the kids to bed I found him in the closet working away. I am so glad I have a husband that can fix things and is willing to. Even if he's never done it before, he'll attempt it. We have saved so much money that way.

There are some things he know he can't fix, and some that are not worth the time and effort. He will maintain our car, but when you can get an oil change for $10, why do it yourself? I will be forever grateful that he fixed it without complaining. Sometimes I think he secretly likes fix-it projects. But I'm sure he wishes the boys wouldn't brake things so often!

packing

I have started packing. Before you think that I am foolish, rushing things, or just plain crazy hear me out. Last night (or rather early this morning) around 2:45 am I heard a crash. Aaron heard it too (so it must have been loud). It sounded like something falling. We figured it must have been toys in the boys' closet - it is a disaster right now). We went back to sleep. When the alarm went off this morning I could hear David in the bathroom, so I got up rather than hit the snooze bar. I changed into my exercise attire and went into our walk-in closet to get my athletic shoes, in the dark I could see a box on the floor and wondered why it was there. I turned on the light to see that the bottom shelf (and clothing rack) on the left had completely fallen off the wall. My clothes and Aaron's ties and the boxes that were on the shelf were scattered everywhere in the closet. I gave up looking for my shoes, since they were under all of my clothes.

It is completely my fault. A couple of days ago the top shelf was getting a little loose, so I took down all of the heavier boxes and put up a few light ones. Since some of those boxes had kids' clothes in them I reorganized them. I wanted to toss out (give away) clothes I wouldn't use again and make sure the clothes were in the right boxes. I condensed them enough to have one less box and I put them back up into the closet. Since I couldn't use the top shelf I put them all on the bottom shelf. Bad idea! It took three days, but they finally collapsed.

I remember that just before we moved into this place Jeff (Lindy's husband) had to put that shelf up. So this isn't the first time it's fallen. So today I unscrewed the last remaining screw in the wall. And I knew I couldn't put all of my clothes on Aaron's side, or we'd have the same problem - another broken shelf. So I hung up the necessary items on the back shelf/rack (it's usually blocked with boxes) and t-shirts on Aaron's side and decided to pick out clothes to give away and pack the sweaters I won't be wearing. Spring is here, which means too hot for sweaters in Texas. (Except at church where I swear it's 60 degrees in there!!!) So I wasn't planning on packing anytime soon, but until Aaron fixes that shelf, it's going to be a mess, so might as well try to clean up what I can.

Updates

The last few days have been crazy. We found an apartment in WA. After looking over our budget many times we decided to start looking for a 2 bedroom apartment instead of a 3 bedroom house. We bought a plane ticket for Aaron to go house hunting in a couple of weeks. Then this apartment came up that we couldn't pass up. It is two block from the main hospital that Aaron will be working at. It is zoned to a fabulous school, and the rent is unbelievably cheap! Two people had contacted the manager before us, so we thought we would have to keep looking. However while I was at choir on Sunday the manager called Aaron and said it was ours if we wanted it. We sent someone to check it out to make sure it was okay. After (and before) we got the good news we prayed and discussed and finally decided to take it. It's about the same size as the place we have now. The only down sides are:
1)the W/D is coin-op, but it's just downstairs from where we will be.
2)We have to pay rent for 6 weeks before we will be there. (trust me, in the end it is worth it. I have a feeling we would have had to pay for at least a month at another place)

We also found out just because we are zoned to the school doesn't mean we'll go there. S* has Open Enrollment, and we missed the deadline. So we can apply (now that we have an address), but the school that we are zoned to (we live in the "reference area") already has a waiting list. But apparently we will get into one of the schools in our "cluster" which are not too bad and not too far away. I'm not sure how I feel about living on the 2nd floor, but maybe it will be warmer in the winter.

Some pluses of our new place (besides the ones mentioned)
1) we are 2 blocks from a park
2) close to the grocery stores and shopping
3) we are close to a 14 mile beautiful trail that will be great for biking, running or strolling (even in the rain).
4) The manager lives downstairs from us, works from home (graphic design) and has a 5 year old boy for David to play with.
5) The manager is getting a "good vibe" from us and has let a few expenses slide for us (like extra application fees -usually it is per adult and a small storage space that is usually $20 a month).
6) We are close to the church (2.4 miles - 8 minute drive no freeways!) and church is still at 9:00. (Supposedly it has the largest primary - another transient ward encompassing the university. And our stake has 3 single student wards)



The apartment has smaller bedrooms, which is fine with me. The living room is a little bigger and the dining area has linoleum instead of carpet! I am very glad about that. I hate having to worry about everything that gets spilled by my children. I hate feeling like I have to vacuum after every meal (and guilty when I don't). Maybe now I will sweep more since I'll be able to see it ;) (The picture is the manager's apartment -the only difference is our appliances are black) I'll miss my walk in closet, but it does have a large hall closet.
So when Aaron goes up in a couple of weeks he'll have a list of things to do, house hunting just won't be one of them.

In other news Timothy's potty training is going well. He has had only a few accidents in the last few days. He is finally telling me that he needs to go. I take him about every two hours if he doesn't tell me. And on Sunday he actually went all by himself. He didn't tell me, and pull his pants down all by himself. He also wakes up dry (morning and nap) every day so far. He has mostly forgotten about the treat after he is done, but we always give it to him if he asks. But he gets lots of praise every time he goes. Wish me luck as we continue.

Happy Birthday Blake

Blake is my BIL, married to Aaron's older sister Beverly. Blake is always ambitious and enthusiastic. He always has some project going on. They have lived in five different homes since I met them 8 years ago. One of which they built. They did home improvement projects on all of them. They are currently planning to build another home behind the one they own now. It was Blake that encouraged my in-laws to add on to their home. And helped them design the addition and helped with the actual building as well.

He is the Culligan Man for his "day" job. He owns and runs the Culligan business in Southeastern Idaho. He is very successful and has been able to enjoy lots of time with his family as a result. He is great with his four boys and has lots of great stories and insights. We sometimes tease him about being jealous of Beverly's one year at BYU while he was on his mission. I believe he proposed 11 days after he came home. Now they have been married almost 11 years. We are so glad to have Blake in our family! Happy Birthday Blake!

Happy Birthday Grandma

Today is Grandma P's birthday. She turns 92. In so many ways she reminds me of Sister Hinckley. Her quiet demeanor, her wit, her compassion. Grandma P is my MIL's mother. She and Grandpa P have four children, Aaron's mom being the youngest. Grandpa P passed away over 20 years ago. She has lived on her own since then, and is always very busy. Only two years ago did she move closer to Aaron's Mom because she was having a hard time keeping up with the yard work. (She was still mowing her own lawn).

She amazes me with her talents and memory. She never forgets a birthday. I am amazed how she keeps in touch and and up to date with everyone, she even sends an email once in a while, and loves to receive them. She makes numerous items for the local fairs every year and usually wins prize money. The quilt we have on our bed was the one she made for Aaron and I when we got married. She has made quilts for all of her grandchildren's weddings, and she has 26 grandchildren! (Four are not married yet) And she has about 30 great-grandchildren (I've lost count).

Grandma P has served many missions. Before she got married she served here in H*, since then she has served in California -with the Vietnamese branch and others I can't remember. She is always involved with temple work, and did lots of extraction before she moved. She has served in so many capacities I can't mention them all. She is fun to talk to and is always giving. She looks after her older sister who lives in Utah in an assisted living facility.

We love that when we go visit Aaron's family Grandma P is only a two minute walk (through the back yard) away! We can't to see her again on our way to WA. We love you Grandma P. Happy Birthday!

I've been busy

I've been neglecting my blog and this is why


Yes, I am potty training Timothy. It's been good so far. Only a few accidents. We didn't use any books or DVDs, just some great advice from SILs. Although my SIL Beverly did recommend the book picture above.
The other reason I haven't blogged as much is because Aaron has been home more. Don't get me wrong, I love having him home. It's just my priorities (and computer access) are different when he is home during the day!

Timothy imitates everything David does, good or bad. David likes to use a knife at dinner time. So Timothy has been asking for one too. Although it took a while for us to figure out what he wanted. He actually says his "l"s pretty well, but sometimes mixes them up with "n"s (I think it's normally the other way around. So at dinner last night he said. "I need a life."
Me: "A what?"
Timothy: "A life, I want a life"
Me(laughing): "What do you need a life for?"
Timothy: "To cut. I need a life to cut my chicken"
Me: "Oh a knife"
Timothy: "Yes, a life!"

David is also getting a kick out of saying "super." He says he'll do something "super fast", or that something is "super cool". I think he got that from Dora or Diego.

My brother Mike

Congratulations to my brother Mike, who will be receiving his acceptance letter to BYU in the near future. He checked to see if he was listed in the student directory online, apparently they are listed there before they get the letter in the mail! He also got accepted to a local University, but since the tuition is more than 10x the amount (5x with a scholarship they offered him) "the choice was easy", he said. I'm sure he will love it there and will do well.



He also participated in St. Baldrick's Day - Here's what he had to say: There are almost 1.5 million new incidents of cancer every year. It is easy to think of that number as just a statistic, but when one stops to think that everyone of those 1.5 million people has a face, has a story, has friends and family, the number becomes more than a statistic. When I thought of the people I knew who had cancer, and multiplied their suffering by 1.5 million, I felt obligated to do anything I could to help fight cancer.

Last year I shaved my head on March 17th to help raise money for the St. Baldrick’s organization. For several weeks beforehand, I carried around a can, collecting spare change and donations from anyone who was willing to spare them. I’m not sure how much money I helped raise in total, but I know the money I helped raise is going towards a good cause. Not only does the St. Baldrick’s organization raise money for cancer research, it also helps spread awareness. After I shaved my head, I was constantly asked why I got rid of my full head of hair. Each time someone asked I was proud to say that I shave my head to raise awareness and money for cancer.

This year, I plan to shave my head once again for the St. Baldrick’s organization. I have not cut my hair since the event last year in hopes that I could draw more attention to the organization this year. St. Baldrick’s is an awesome organization and I encourage anyone who is interested to participate.

While I'm at it I'll give him a little more praise! This week he has three band concerts. His high school band's spring concert is Tuesday and then Thursday and Friday his community college bands perform. And if that isn't enough, on Sunday he leaves (with the group that performs on Friday) for NYC on Sunday to perform at Carnegie Hall on the 28th!!! Isn't that awesome?? Yes I am proud of my brother! After all I did help raise him. I was 12 when he was born! Man I am old!

Quiet time activities

This is what David did during quiet time yesterday. He did it without prompting too! He just asked for some paper, and glue.



This one is for me. He glued the ribbon and the heart on the paper. In case you can't read it it says, "I love mommy and you are great" OK, he can't spell, but hey, he can write!!!


This one is for Aaron. He went on and on about the things he likes to play with Daddy, ball, games, etc. Then he drew all of the hearts.


He even made one for Timothy. Part of it says, "I love Timothy and we love him and I like him and he is nice and..." How cute!

Happy Birthday Aaron

No, not my husband, but my BIL. Aaron B. married my little sister Becca a little over 2 years ago. They are expecting a little girl in just a couple of weeks!!! Wow I can't believe it! Unfortunately I haven't been around them too much. We got to spend a week in the same house over Christmas, so I got to know Aaron a little better. This is what I have learned:
He is a perfect match for my sister!
He treats her very well.
He loves to play with my brothers.
He is a hard worker, and can do anything he puts his mind too. (He is the top installer at his summer job of installing security systems - 3 years in a row I believe)
He has lots of great plans and dreams!

Thanks for taking care of my sister. You will be a great Dad! Good luck in your last year of college!

Match Day revisited

We had a lot of fun yesterday. We got see and talk to lots of people. We were cringing with anticipation when Dr. D* said we had 2 minutes before the board would be unveiled. Even though the kids downed about 5 cookies (each) and ran around on the muddy grass, it was fun. Here are some pictures. Do you recognize anyone?

We were very excited to share the news with everyone. My Mom cried, OK so did I. After we went to the lunch at Dr. D's house we headed home. In less than an hour we had two people from WA call us. One was a resident that Aaron has been in touch with. The other was the chief resident with a congratulations and telling him that an information packet was on it's way.

We didn't expect to have to jump into this so quickly. They are already asking us for information, including vacation preferences, continuity clinic preferences and elective preferences. Aaron has a check list of 5 forms he has to fill out. And we are really getting serious about finding a place to live. Orientation starts June 18th and his contract starts June 25th!!! We have a job!!!!!

Match Day

Today is match day, and we are excited to announce that we will be moving to Washington. It was our first choice and we are very happy! More details to come later!

Funny things kids say

I bought some Lucky Charms because it was a really good sale. We don't have this very often so my kids were excited. But since we don't have it often David didn't know what it was called. He also wasn't listening very well when I told him what it was called,
because he began calling it "Chucky Charms!"

Timothy began saying a word a few weeks ago, and I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought it was an adjective because he would say "neffer toys" and "neffer cracker" and "neffer bowl". I thought maybe it was a color, since he doesn't get those right. Then I realized he was saying "another." "Another toy, cracker, bowl, etc...."

Happy Birthday MOM

Happy Birthday MOM! Today is my MIL’s birthday. I am very fortunate to have wonderful in-laws. When people talk about their horrible in-laws, I can’t relate. We have always gotten along. My MIL is kind, intelligent and down-to-earth. She knows how to have fun with her kids, and also teach them how to work. She has raised (is still raising) 11 children and has done a fabulous job.
I love that when I need some advice, not only do I have lot of friends to ask, but two great older and wiser women to go to.
The picture was taken when she came to visit us after Timothy was born (Man, were my kids ever that small?). I have more recent pictures, but I think this one has a beautiful, genuine smile. That is how I think of her.
Mom, thank-you for being a great support to us. Here are some great memories I have of you.
• Altering my wedding dress when the dress shop “couldn’t get around to it”
• Giving me endless ideas for meals and lots of recipes
• Calling me for no reason, or because Aaron is out of town
• Calling me to get a recipe you gave to me
• Playing wiffle ball with all the kids and grandkids
There are so many great things you have done for us it’s hard to list them all. I just want you to know we love you and appreciate everything you do. I hope you have a fabulous birthday!

Timothy's ABCs

This morning Timothy was singing his ABCs. Aaron said they went like this, "A, B, C, D, E, K, G,..." EKG? He's been listening to his Dad way too much!

AOA

The kids are sleeping (both of them), and it's Sunday, so I am not distracted by other things, so I am blogging like crazy. This week Aaron and I had the opportunity to eat at Trevisio's. Aaron has been there several times, although he has never had to pay for it! But this was for the AOA induction dinner, and we only had to pay for me (it was still very expensive). Aaron really wanted me to be there. The food was good, service - okay. We got to mingle with other in AOA and their families. But mostly I just wanted to document that Aaron has done really well here, and I am very proud of him.
Pardon me if I brag a little (I try not to do this often). I know there are lots of deserving people that didn't get this award (including husbands of readers of this blog), but Aaron was fortunate enough to get the nomination and be voted into this honor society with about 15 others. As they said at the ceremony, it wasn't just academics, but leadership qualities and service that got him in. Aaron is very humbled by this honor, and is still amazed that people think he is a good leader. He just puts his heart and soul into everything he does, including his family. And that is why I am grateful for him.
I guess that is really what I wanted to say. Even if he never got an award or scholarship or anything I would be proud of him. And whether we get our first choice or our fifth choice on Thursday, I will be proud of him. I am glad that people other than me recognize his hard work, but he will always be my hero! Thank-you Aaron (yes, he does read my blog)!

New blog

Okay, I started another blog. I decided to start posting recipes. So check it out. Thanks for the encouragement Audra!

Reminder

Today I enjoyed a wonderful day at church. We had great speakers and teachers. I resolved to do better at my personal prayers. But I think the lesson I learned most was on the way home from church. As I exited the freeway I saw a beggar at the corner, I instinctively checked to see if my doors were locked. As I started to use the U-turn (to avoid stopping at the light) I recognized someone walking across the street. It was a brother from our ward. He and his family don't have much, and I saw their van stopped about 1/2 block away from the intersection. I wondered if he needed help, so I slowed down and pulled over to the side and waited for him to get a little closer so I could ask if he needed help. Then I saw the most humbling thing. He walked over to the man who was begging and gave him something to eat and some cash. Now I don't know how much it was and the food looked like it was a sno-ball. But why was my instinct to lock my doors? And here this man, with little of his own, stopped his car and walked a block to give this beggar something to eat.

We are supposed to be Christlike. I am supposed to help others. Now I don't usually have cash with me. But I had a whole diaper bag of snacks (graham crackers, pretzels etc.) my kids didn't eat at church. They will probably sit in there until they get stale and I throw them out. I could have given those away. Today I have learned about compassion and service. I realize I can't give to everyone, and I suppose my friend from church doesn't do that every day. But I need to be reminded that we are all children of God and that we need to help our brothers and sisters in any way that we can. I know our fast offerings go to those who need help, but sometimes I think I can do more.
I remember Jessica M. who used to be in my ward. As I drove to Stake Choir with her once she gave some change to a beggar. She said that she always put her change in the car so she can give it away. She was also an at-home-mom whose husband was finishing up school. So I know I've learned this lesson before. But some times I need a reminder.

I Believe in Being Honest

Lately David has had a little trouble telling the truth. It usually consists of David and Timothy being in the same room, and me in another room. Then Timothy screams or yells and then starts crying. Now Timothy can do a pretty good fake cry. So I try not to accuse, but rather ask them both what happened. Sometimes David responds: "I didn't hit (push, bite, etc.) him." That usually tells me he's lying, especially when I ask Timothy what happened and see the bite marks, scratch etc. So last night we had a FHE on Honesty. I told a few stories and played a little made up board game. David gave the right answers to the questions, but I still wonder if sunk in.

Even though I am an honest person, I sometimes struggle to tell the whole truth. I mentioned a few weeks ago that Timothy had taken scissors to a library book. It was the last page, and not really part of the story. Like many of you we have a small budget and paying full price for a children's book is not in the budget. I was tempted to just rip out the page and turn it in. I was tempted to lie and just say he ripped it out. But I knew that was not the right thing to do. And after last night's FHE I knew I had to do what I had been dreading to do.

Today we went to the library and I explained to David what we were going to do. I told him that I wasn't sure we were going to check out anymore books. Part of the reason is because Timothy is sick, but I had to go today because it was due today and I had no more renewals left. I also wasn't sure I wanted to risk ruining another book. When David asked why we wouldn't get anymore books I said, "Because we ruined the book." When he said, "Well, we don't have to tell them it's broken" I knew my teaching moment had come. So I reminded him about our lesson last night and asked what he thought we should do. He said, "Tell the truth." I was pleased and we headed out the door.

I had the boys stand with me as I explained to the librarian what happened, and I did have to pay full price for the book because it was a new book, but at least I got to keep it. I really did feel good after that, even though I had to shell out more money than I usually pay for 4 books. Because the boys behaved well I let them pick 5 books and 2 DVDs and we happily left after 15 minutes. Timothy fell asleep on the way home (evidence that he is still sick), and I go to talk to David about being honest. I know he won't be perfect, but I'd like to think that I was a good example for him today, and that maybe he'll remember that I was honest when it would have been easy to lie. I hope I taught him something today.

Reading

On Saturday the kids woke up at 6:00 am. I was planning on sleeping in a little, but I couldn't. So I went out and did some Tae-Bo. The kids were reading books when I went out there, they just weren't very quiet. While I was exercising David sat on the couch and read out loud The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. He really read it, every word. I'm sure he knew most of the words by the pictures. But if he didn't recognize the word right away he would sound it out. We have him read with us each day, like a line from the scriptures, or a line from a story book. But usually after one sentence he doesn't want to read any more. So I didn't say anything to David for fear he would stop reading. To my knowledge this is the first book he has read completely by himself! I am so proud of him. I cannot jinx myself here. Even if he doesn't do it again for a long time, he has already done it!!!

Timothy is starting to make jokes. He already laughs at silly things, and could make silly faces, and do silly things. But now he is using words to make jokes i.e., he tells me that I am Daddy, or that he is a dog. He thinks he is so funny! It's great.

One of the many joys in being a mom is watching my children accomplish new things, and know that I probably helped them do it!

Favorite Artist You've Seen in Concert: I've been to very few concerts - unless you are counting band and orchestra ;), so of all that I have seen (3 I think) Brooks and Dunn was by far the best and most memorable. Hurray for the Rodeo!

Four Most Listened to Artists on your iPod lately: Don't have an iPod. On the radio it's : Brooks and Dunn, George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts. I really do listen to stuff other than country, but I think that's what I have most of right now.

Mission Call

Last night Aaron's younger brother received his mission call. Using Skype Aaron set up a conference call to call family in ID, UT, KS, and WA. With everyone listening Anthon read that he was called to the Sacramento, CA mission (English speaking). That was fun to hear. Not only is that the mission my family lives in, but my BIL (Valerie's husband) Christian served there as well, albeit 10 years ago. We are excited for him. He will finish out the semester at BYU and enter the MTC on the 16th of May. Aaron's graduation is the 22nd, but I don't know if his parents will be able to come with everything else going on at that time.

Another note... I have jinxed myself too many times. Maybe I shouldn't post my kids' accomplishments, it always backfires on me. Timothy told me today that his blue block was green and his green block was red. At least he still knows orange. And after 8 successful dry nights David had an accident the next night, and wanted to wear a pull-up last night and it wasn't dry this morning either. Oh well, it will happen sooner or later.
