The Garden Before The Reunion

On the 21st I took some more pictures of the garden.  I know they are over a week old, but I thought I'd share them anyway.
The tomatoes are taking over
This one will be the first one to pick

Amy wanted one of her on the wall
The kohlrabi is getting big

Onions are almost ready

The peppers are finally flowering

The cucumber plant finally has flowers too

Those pole beans are growing a lot

some of the zucchini

The zucchini grew so much we had to raise the sprinkler so the cucumbers and cantaloupe would get watered.

Look at that corn!

The peas are done

Lots of green carrot tops

Bush beans

Potatoes - they look sad, but the four hills we've eaten so far were yummy!

The pumpkins are out of control.  I have to keep them from climbing the wall and going into the pasture

Amy was having fun in front of the raspberries

The corn in the back is actually taller even though we planted it two weeks later.

The biggest sunflower - but still shorter than the corn

David's cabbage.  We found a lot of little bugs on it, so we sprayed it hoping that it will continue to grow.

The strawberries are growing like crazy

another picking of beans

raspberries and strawberries from the 21st

Up next - the reunion!

Summer Catch Up

The last few weeks have been busy and fun.  David has enjoyed making "Happy Meals" for everyone at lunch time.  This is a typical lunch of his.

The blueberries and cherries are now gone (or frozen). The middle was leftovers.

One the 15th we picked our first zucchini, and have since picked about 4 or 5 a day.  I think we have too many zucchini plants.
We also picked our first beans on the 15th.  Amy helped me snap the beans

I'm struggling to remember everything  that we did before the reunion.  We made several shopping trips.  We found out that a friend of ours (someone Aaron home teaches) broke several bones after falling from a ladder.  We are glad that she is home recovering after surgery in Seattle.  It has been a pleasure to serve her and her family.  There was a thunderstorm on Monday the 18th.  Just as we were getting ready for the bed the sun was low enough to break through the clouds and produce a beautiful rainbow.  I wish my camera could have captured its beauty.

The week before the reunion I spent some time emailing back and forth with everyone to make sure everyone had their questions answered.  Aaron put together a fun game, I attempted to clean the house, and get the weeding down before we left town.

The kids swam when it was hot, watched movies, played on the computer, and read lots of books.  We got all of their summer reading prizes, and they were kind of lame, but it kept them reading.  I only found time to read one book for myself.  The boys did have some friends over to swim one day.  But otherwise the boys were having a hard time getting along, so I wasn't about to have more kids over to make things worse between them.  Perhaps they will be better this week, and we can have more friends over.

Happy Anniversary to Us!

I don't even know where to start.  I am so far behind.  It's been over two weeks since I posted anything, and so many things have happened.  I have several posts coming, but I just don't have the time to do them all right now.  But I'm still alive and well, I just have been busy pulling everything together for our G* Family Reunion, then hosted Kimberly and her family, and then spent 5 fabulous days with the entire family plus one (that's 43 people in all) at the reunion.  Since we got home we've hosted 5 of those family members (for one night), and I've been cleaning house like crazy unpacking, doing laundry, and keeping the kiddos busy.  And today I get to to finally see Harry Potter 7.2 with my fabulous husband to celebrate 12 years of marriage (tomorrow).  I have a lot of pictures to edit and post, and it may take some time, so we'll see if I get to it today, or tomorrow, maybe Monday.  I just seem to be pretty busy trying to keep up with all the zucchini my garden is producing.  Zucchini bread anyone?  Until next time...

Blueberries and Raspberries

After we recovered from our BBQ on Saturday we relaxed on Sunday.  I planned to have leftovers, since we had so many.  While we were eating a late lunch after church, our new friends Phillip and Julianna invited us over for dinner.  We offered to bring leftover macaroni salad - honestly I'm not a fan of macaroni salad.  This one was bought from a deli, wasn't even opened, so we had it for dinner Saturday night.   The kids said they didn't like it.  I had some for lunch on Sunday, and it was less than desirable.  It's still sitting in the fridge.  I think I should just throw it out!

So after Timothy and I played a game and Aaron and David did some home teaching and Amy took a nap, we went had dinner with the I* family.  She made a wonderful lasagna, and a really tasty herb bread.  We enjoyed the time talking with them.  The kids asked permission to go upstairs, and they found lots of toys to play with including a lot of stuffed animals, and a lite bright.  The boys had a lot of fun with that.  Then David found their collection of games, and played Farkle with Aaron and Pass the Pigs with me.  Timothy and Amy took turns getting in trouble for jumping off their furniture.  Once it was past 8:00 we decided to go home.  We hope to have them over sometime soon.

Monday was Aaron's day off this week.  We had heard about a couple of blueberry patches in the area, and decided to check one of them out.  We called just after 8:00am to see if they were ready or not.  They had just opened that morning, so we headed out around 8:30am.  It only took a couple of minutes to get there, we picked for about an hour and 15 minutes  We would have stayed longer but the boys had swimming lessons.  David really just wanted to search the entire farm for the biggest blueberries.  He was getting annoyed with a really loud bird when we realized it was a recording, I guess to scare off other birds.  Amy mostly just ate the blueberries.  Timothy got bored.  However they liked that the lady gave them a candy when we weighed our blueberries.  We ended up picking 21 3/4 lbs.

After swimming we stopped by Crystal's to pick raspberries.  She has told us several times to come and pick.  So we spent about 45 minutes picking, and got a few pounds.  I had to take pictures when we got home.

The berries aren't huge - but so sweet, and a little tart.  Perfect - especially for free!

Lots of blueberries

Even more blueberries!
Look at the size of some of these blueberries!!! (Yes that's my hand, not Amy's)

We froze some of the blueberries.  I've filled up 3 1/2 gallon size freezer bags (I ran out of quart size bags).  I made some blueberry syrup (just a simple syrup with blueberries boiled into it- perhaps next time I'll juice the blueberries and make real blueberry syrup).

I made some raspberry freezer jam, and some in jelly jars.
I would have made more but I ran out of pectin.

Monday afternoon there was more swimming, and just a lot of playing.  That resulted in a lot of cleaning up later.  Aaron and I played another short game of the Farming Game, after the kids were in bed.

Tuesday the boys had check ups at the clinic.  Aaron had a couple of no shows so he came over and stayed with us until he got a text letting him know they had roomed a patient.  It was kind of humorous watching the two MAs tag team getting the stats for the boys.  David is 72 lbs, and was very excited to see that he was 4'8" - only 1 inch short of getting out of the booster seat.  Yes we are a little strict about keeping our kids safe in the van.  Timothy is 60 lbs, and just under 4 feet tall.  Both passed their hearing tests - no excuses now, right?  David has taken after me and read the row under the red line for the eye test.  Timothy struggled with reading the "F" on the last line, but read the others fine.  Both passed the eye test.  No other concerns so we were done by about 8:30.  There was no point in sticking around for 90 minutes before swimming lessons so we went home.

However the kids were pushing and shoving trying to get into the van, and that set off a sequence of events that led to me yelling "shut up" (about the worst thing the kids think I could say).  I made them all cry.  How did such a good morning turn out so rotten on a 10 minute drive home?  I calmed down after I did some laundry.  I talked with them and apologized and we got ready for swimming lessons.  Things went much better after that.  David had to earn all of his computer time back by sorting and folding laundry, reading books to Amy, and playing nicely with Timothy - he got almost all of the time back, somehow he couldn't play nicely with Timothy for even 25 minutes.

I'm still trying to remember what else we did that night.  I think we went out and picked more raspberries, and strawberries, and talked with our neighbors who were picking cherries.  I eventually had to drag the kids inside to take baths.

Wednesday I attempted to do some shopping in the city before swimming lessons, however it took longer than I expected and we only got to one store, and it was 9:40 by the time we got back into the van - it takes at least 25 minutes to get to the swimming pool from there, and there is construction right now.  They were a little late on test day - oops.  Then Amy didn't want to sit where I directed her and spent the next 10 minutes complaining that she wanted to sit on the other side of the pool.  Probably because she didn't want me to talk to Audra.  I eventually got her to calm down when we found her puppy in the diaper bag.  After swimming lessons the kids wanted to go back up to the city to go to the other stores, but I didn't want to make the trip again, on the same day.  So I suggested blueberry picking again.  Amy and David wanted to go, but Timothy didn't.  I guess you can't please everyone.  We ended up going for about an hour before lunch.  Timothy picked for about 5 minutes and then was completely bored, and spent the rest of the time sitting under a tree - at least he wasn't complaining anymore.  Amy sat with him for a while.  David picked about half the time.  Between the two of us (and the 100 berries that Timothy picked) we got another 9 1/2 lbs.  Not having Aaron there made a big difference, we didn't get nearly as many.  I froze another 2 quarts (I got quart size bags at the store that morning), but we've just been eating the rest - adding them to our breakfast, and snacking on them throughout the day.

Aaron picked a few more cherries after dinner.  We didn't get too many because their sprinklers were on next the cherry trees, and the ladders were wet, and not safe to use.  It's the tail end of the season, but there are still some good cherries left.  They are a little sticky from the juice of other cherries that have been snacked on by the birds. Perhaps we'll get more today or tomorrow.

Today has been pretty normal other than a quick trip to the store after swimming lessons.  Amy only took a one hour nap though, this could be a long day.  I'd better go play with the kids.  I can't believe I am all caught up.  I'm sure I'll get behind again, because life doesn't stop.  And we've got plenty going on especially in the next few weeks.

Work BBQ

This last week has been fun, and really busy.  For the first time we hosted a work party at our home.  We had several projects and house cleaning items that I wanted to finish before the party on Saturday.  Unfortunately with 3 kids in the house I can't clean on Monday and expect to have them still clean by Saturday, so most of the cleaning had to be done Friday and Saturday morning.  Of course we had the normal stuff to do everyday as well.  The kids had swimming lesson everyday except for Monday.  I finally took some pictures.  David is getting really good, and is learning how to breathe during freestyle - not my favorite thing either.  Timothy is having fun as well.  I hope he keeps working on it, so he can pass for next year.

We took two different shopping trips after swim lessons to get everything done that we needed to. Mostly we needed to get things for our BBQ on Saturday.  Aaron fixed the last of the sprinklers, so hopefully we won't have to fix more any time soon.

We had been talking about the upcoming party, and for some reason Amy thought it was herr birthday party.  We had this conversation:
Amy: When I wake up can I have my party?
Me: No.
Amy: Why?
Me: Because it's not your birthday.
Amy: Yes, it's September 3rd.

It was actually July 7th - but she didn't quite understand that.

Friday I took a break from cleaning and made a cherry pie with the tart cherries our home teacher gave us.  I don't know if I've ever made one from scratch, I think I've only used the cherry pie filling previously.
It was a really good pie!

Saturday morning as soon as we were done with breakfast we started getting ready for the party.  I can't believe I was still rushing around still minutes before it started.  I gave myself 15 minutes to shower and get ready.  However I was somewhat relieved when no one showed up at 12:00.  I was able to get some dishes done and a couple of other last minute things.  When no one was here at 12:20 I was starting to get worried.  But 12:30 our first guests arrived.  By 12:45 most everyone was there and we started eating.  Amy picked apart her hamburger, and enjoyed all the cherries and raspberries.

Mirna bought a cake from Carol P* (a mutual neighbor)

I had fun talking to a lot of people.  There were some really good salads, and someone brought horchata, fresh raspberries, Henry Winehards Root Beer and Thomas Kemper Ginger Ale.  We provided hot dogs, hamburgers, and black bean burgers (we knew there was at least one vegetarian).  One of the medical assistants brought her DIL and her 4 children.  They had just bought a new home, and she were curious about our home, so I gave them a little tour.  Then her 4 and my two boys swam in the pool.

One of the purchases I made earlier in the week was a slip 'n slide.  We set it up on a slight hill, and the kids had a lot of fun with it.
Amy still won't get in the pool, but she had fun running down the slide with her sandals on.

After the last guests left around 3:30 we decided to check out what needed to be harvested.
These were harvested last Thursday

We finally got some potatoes - we dug up two hills

We got a lot of peas!
It took us over and hour to shuck them all.

Amy had fun helping

Yes she's still in her swimsuit

We froze 3 quarts and had the rest for dinner.  Amy loved eating them raw, but wouldn't eat them cooked.

We also had some Swiss chard - mmm!

One of our guests at the BBQ was the new pediatrician that will be starting here in the fall.  He and his wife and adorable little girl were in town looking for a house to rent.  They currently live in Connecticut, and brought us some gifts from the East Coast.
Real maple syrup and three maple candies for the kids.
We've had so much left over from the BBQ and birthdays that they haven't even eaten the candy yet.

One last picture - Amy enjoying some left over cake after dinner.  Half of the cake was still there at the end of the BBQ and we've been eating it, and giving it away.
