January 30 - February 3

Since we're finishing up another month, the leveled library will be collecting the January reading calendars.  Remember, as we begin the month of February, that reading 20 minutes per school night for the homework should add up to 400 minutes of reading (which will earn your child the reading prize for the month).  Have a wonderful week!  

January 23 - 27

The end of the month is quickly approaching.  Please don't forget to keep listening to your child read for 20 minutes each night.  This small amount of your time, consistently sacrificed, will pay off!  Wednesday, we will be celebrating the 100th day of being in first grade!  Your child has probably already decided what small item he/she will count 100 of to bring to school in the brown paper bag I sent home last Friday.  Please encourage him/her to make up 3 clues about the item chosen and to remember to bring the bag with 100 items and the clues to school on Wednesday.  It has been exciting to watch your children grow and progress during these past 100 days of school, and I am looking forward to celebrating this progress with them  this week!  As always, thank you for all of your support!

January 17 - 20

I hope that everyone had a nice long weekend!  This week, we will be wrapping up our math unit on shapes and measurement.  Our unit pretest will be given Thursday, and our test will be Friday.  We are quickly approaching the 100th day of the school year, which is Wednesday, January 25.  Later this week, I will be sending home a few activities for the students to complete in preparation for this celebration.  The main one will be for the students to count 100 of some small item, then bring the items to school next week.  Have a good week!

January 9 - 13

This week, we will be completing the reading testing which the state now requires for first-graders mid-year.  We will also be testing on Unit 3 of Treasures in the computer lab on Thursday morning.  Your children will do their best on these tests if they come to school having had a good night's sleep and a good breakfast.  If you didn't get a chance to look at the school newsletter (Enterprise Eagle News) -- sent home Monday -- take a minute to look at it. Also sent home Monday, there is also a calendar for keeping track of minutes read for the Kite Festival prizes.  Make sure you hold onto this bright green reading log.  The minutes you sign off on the baggy book reading log can be put on this Kite Festival log as well -- so their minutes read actually do double duty!  Thank you, parents, for all of your help and support!

January 3 - 9

Happy New Year!  It is good to be back!  With just 5 months left of this school year, we will be really concentrating on those things that we need to accomplish by year's end.  Reading is our number one priority.  By the end of the year, first graders should be reading independently at level J or higher.  (Right now, level G is "on grade level").  We will be working hard at school in small groups, whole-class groups, and sometimes one-on-one to help students progress.  It is my hope that students will read, read, READ at home as well, with your support and help.  Thank you for all you do to help your child succeed!
