January 28 - February 1

It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through this school year!  Time really flies!  I am very pleased with the progress that the class is making and with the things they are eagerly learning!  As January comes to a close, we are gearing up for the busy month of February.  With Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day,  and Dr. Seuss week, the month is already full.  Then when we add the end of trimester activities and short school days for parent-teacher conference week, I'm sure we will notice that the month will be gone before we know it.  It is my hope that the students are sharing with you what they are doing in school and that you are able to take the time at home to reinforce what we are learning.  That way, when the end of the year sneaks up on us, your children will have learned all they need to know to become successful second graders next year!  Thank you!

January 22 - 25

On Tuesday, we will celebrate our 100th day in school!  We are celebrating the students being "100 days smarter", and we will focus on all of the things they have learned so far this year.  We will finish up our measurement and geometry unit in math, with our practice test and review on Friday.  Just a reminder, this month is just about over.  Don't forget to encourage your child to read each night and fill out the reading log.

January 14 - 18

This Tuesday morning, our class will be going to the computer lab and taking our Treasures Unit 3 literacy test.  Our test time is 8:15, so please help your child to arrive on time.  Having a good breakfast that morning and a good night's sleep the night before will help the children do their best.  Beginning this week, you should notice that our weekly literacy test score may look a little different.  A short written answer will be included on the test, as well as the usual multiple choice questions.  I will send a copy of one of the tests home with the children so that you will be able to see what is expected of them.  Thank you for all of your support!

January 7 - 11

This week, we will have a math practice test on Unit 6 on Tuesday, as well as a test on Wednesday.  A team  from the district will be coming this week to give the DIBELS reading assessment to the students.  The students will be asked to read a few passages to check their fluency and comprehension.  The December reading calendars are due this week.  Those students who met the reading goal will attend the monthly reading party on Friday.  Have a wonderful week!

January 3 - 4

Welcome, 2013!  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break! We're back to school with a short week!  Because of this, we will not have a new spelling list this week.  We will be reviewing the "silent e" words we've been learning.  (Next week's spelling words will begin with "str-", "spl-", and "scr-".)  Remember to return the filled-in reading logs for December and to continue to encourage your child to read every night for the class homework.   Thank you!
