February 24 - 28

This week, I'd like to encourage everyone to make daily reading for 20 minutes a priority.  This is what I consider to be the most important "homework" your child should do each day.  The math homework worksheets are a great addition to that, if your child has the time to do them after he/she is finished reading.  I know that there are some children and their families who like to spend more time doing "homework".  If you and your child are interested in additional activities to work on at home, let me know, and I can provide something else. (There is IXL for math practice.  Your child's username is his/her first initial and last name--all in one word, and the password is his/her number in our class.)  Although these extra activities at home can be a benefit to your child, I strongly believe that reading each day is the best at-home activity most first-graders can do to ensure academic success in the future.  Thanks for all of your support!

February 18 - 21

This is the first week of the third trimester!  How time has flown this year!  The students have really made progress and have learned a lot so far this year!  I am looking forward to a great trimester!  Thank you for all of your support!

February 10 - 14

Reminder:  Monday is an "early-out" day . . . dismissal will be at 12:35.
This week will be a busy one as we test on the math and literacy units we have just finished, as we begin new units, and as we prepare to celebrate Valentine's Day (Friday) and Presidents' Day (next Monday).  This Friday is also the end of our second trimester.  That means that report cards and parent-teacher conferences are coming up.  Look for more information to come home about parent sign-ups on the online conference scheduler starting this week.  The dates of the actual conferences will be 2/24 - 2/27.  Each of those days will be "early-out".  I'm looking forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child's progress!

February 3 - 7

     Thank you to all of you parents who discussed everyday uses of math with your children this past week!  We will use the information that the students gathered to create a classroom chart and to continue our group discussion about math all around us.
     The reading calendars for January are due this week.  The Miss Enterprise royalty has encouraged us to increase our reading minutes for February by sponsoring a competition between kindergarten and first-grade classrooms.  The class with the most minutes read during February will get an ice cream party.  As always, the incentives are simply the "extras".  Our hope is that the students will enjoy reading everyday!
